number of swaddle me/sleep sacks per baby?

I just did an inventory, and we have 7 kiddopotamus and halo sleep sacks/swaddle me in newborn size. So that's about 2 per baby. Does that seem like enough? We also have a million receiving blankets we could use for swaddling.

I'm asking b/c we just got 3 more swaddlers in newborn size and have to decide whether to return them - maybe exchange for a larger size?

Re: number of swaddle me/sleep sacks per baby?

  • if they are the swaddles with the velcro- i'd return them all and just get a bunch of miracle blankets - honestly- they are AWESOME.  My boys all were able to bust out of the ones with velcro very fast - but the Miracle Blankets were like straight jackets - we used them until they were 6mo old! (in the later months swaddling with their legs out of the leg pocket)

we had about 3 per baby - so we'd have one to wear and get puked on- one to put on after the puke - and one in the wash...

  • they are the ones with velcro. Unfortunately the 7 we already have are already out of the package and washed (and some were given to us used). So maybe we'll think about returning the 3 new ones we haven't opened and exchanging them for something else.

  • I would see how you like the velcro ones before taking them back. We love the velcro ones and have 3 per baby. If one gets spit up on then we have spares. Also, I wouldn't necessarily change them for other sizes yet. I don't think our boys will be swaddled for much past 3 months (they say that is when they lose their startle reflex and swaddling isn't as useful). You may not like them then return them or you may love them and want to swaddle later. But as long as you can return them in a few months I'd keep them and see how you like them. I don't know what the miracle blanket is though so I can't compare.

  • Love the SwaddleMes!  2 per baby is enough.

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • Agree that 2 is enough per baby. Are they fleece or cotton? The fleece ones make my boys sweat terribly, so we stick to the cotton ones.

When you figure out what each of your DC likes, I would have 3 for each baby--one on, one in the laundry, and one clean one in the drawer.  Just remember that what goes for one, might not work for all.  I have one DD that loved to be swaddled and we used miracle blankets and a couple other swaddle blankets for her while my other DD wasn't a fan--we went straight with sleep sacs for her.

I wouldn't do anything with the new swaddlers (like wash, etc).  I might return them, but I don't think I'd get anything else until you figure out what works for you.

  • I would second making sure you have cotton swaddlers - we just had to buy a bunch of cotton ones because after a few hot days (we're in S. California), it became obvious that the fleece swaddlers are no good.
  • For swaddlers, we always had 3-4 per baby so that we had spares if they had an accident on them. As for sleep sacks, as our girls got older we went down from 3 sleep sacks each to just 2. 2 fleece for winter and 2 cotton for summer. FWIW, my kiddos are STILL using their sleep sacks, they love them. WHen they are tired, they will go into their room, get their sleep sacks and the bring it to me to signal that they want to take a nap. SO cute.
  • We use the velcro Swadde Mes and love them. We have 4 cotton and 2 fleece. I think either 2-3 per baby is enough. We had the newborn sizes and ended up buying preemie sizes since our girls responded so well to them. I returned the large size. Our girls are so tiny, I don't know yet if they will need them by the time the large would fit.
  • with ds I always had at least 4 sleep sacs on hand...that gave me one for him to wear and 3 extras that were clean. Especially when he was younger cuz he spit up or was just more likely to make a mess.

He wore them to bed and all naps, which until he was about 8 months was 3 naps a day...that has the potential for lots of dirty sleep sacs : /plus it saved me from doing laundry every day as opposed to every other day.

he hated to be swaddled so we never swaddled him...he did not like his arms being constricted in the swaddle : / fine by me...one less thing to break him of later!

  • I loved my ones with the velcro and so did the twins.  I would say 2 per child is good in newborn size.  I would exchange for larger ones.

  • My babies hated being swaddled...big waste of money!
  • It's so hard to say, because every baby is different. My babies hated any sort of sleep sac or swaddle me thing - they liked being swaddled with plain old receiving blankets. I would say it's best to have a few of each and see what your babies like better, then return what you don't need.
  • It sounds like you definitely have enough to start with, and I wouldn't open and wash the additional ones just yet.  We have 1 XXS and 3 XS/newborn Halo Sleepsack Swaddles, all fleece (feb in MN).  And that is enough.  It does depend on how much your LO spits up and how often you want to do laundry, but I'd say you have enough and are better off getting regular Halo sleepsacks in a bigger size for when your LO is done swaddling.
