Screaming during changes?

My DS screams like we are cutting his foot off everytime we change his diaper... anyone elses lo do this? Should we be concerned?

Re: Screaming during changes?

  • maybe the wipes irritate her, or she doesn't like how cold they are? Does she have a rash?

  • it will get better, DD did the same thing. Do you have a wipe warmer?

  • I have checked his rear cuz I thought maybe he did have one but it looks fine. And he might not like the cold but he starts screaming from the time I lay him down on the changing pad/table. I guess it could be normal but I feel so bad for him.
  • If ya don't have a wipe warmer, fold a paper towel over them and stick them in the microwave a few seconds. If they get to hot pull them apart and they will cool off quickly.  Maybe you should try cotton balls and warm water to see if that helps if the wipes are irritating him.
  • Sometimes she screams, other times not so much. I think she hates the wipes being cold.
  • My LO fusses during diaper changes, she doesn't like being stripped down. We have found that she loves the sound of the fan in the bathroom that we change her in, so we turn on that bad boy and she tolerates it much better.

I agree. DD used to scream bloody murder during diaper changes but has since learned to love them. Now she smiles the entire time.

  • Ours used to scream like we were cutting off his foot with a dull rusty blade....

    Now he usually smiles.

  • My DS will SCREAM if I change him BEFORE feeding him. When I feed him first and then change him, he's a happy camper! :)

Make sure LO's needs are met first, then change :)

This is good advice. Also, and it sounds silly, make sure you talk to him and tell him what's going on. I swear that as soon as I go to the kitchen and tell Lily "OK, Mommy is going to make you a bottle now" she calms down. I don't know...I think they understand a lot. Even if it's just the soothing tone of your voice try. Just keep it relaxed and tell him what you're doing beforehand and talk to him the whole time. Before you lay him down, "Wow! Your diaper is really full! That must feel so yucky! Mommy is going to change your diaper. Let's lay you down and take off your pants..." etc.

Since you have a little boy you don't even need to use wipes if it's just pee. Maybe try some "dry" changes with no wipes and just keep talking to him. He might start to calm down during changes once he hears you talking to him and then you can try reintroducing the wipes.

Like I said, I know it sounds crazy to think they can comprehend. And I know that all kids are different. But this is my technique and neither one of my kids or any of the kids I watched when I ran a daycare ever fought me on diaper changes.

    Good luck!
