s/o maternity leave the other day...

I just got an email with a faculty commitment form for the next school year and there's a section that says, "Potential conflicts or declarations you would like theadministration to consider when making staff assignments for the 2010-2011 year:"

LOL, I guess this means it's time to bring up the maternity leave!

  • I wouldn't just yet. You don't have to tell them you are pregnant until you are ready! I'd wait til after the first trimester
  • I agree with pp - you don't have to tell until you are ready.  I wouldn't say anything until after the first trimester.

  • I would have waited too, but I know a lot of your coworkers already know, so you might as well tell them :-)
  • You don't have to tell them right away.  I didn't tell me principal about going on maternity leave till we were almost done with school last year. I was due in June, but my son made a wee early appearance in May.  I waited till the summer to do my request for leave.

  • I had already told some of the office personnel and administration just because I couldn't contain it and some of my friends had posted on facebook.  There was no way for me to hide it for so long and I figured if anything happened then they would be more understanding. As far as the paperwork, you girls are right, that doesn't need to be finalized until later.  I think what I want to discuss more than anything are my responsibilities/duties for next year.

  • I think you might as well go ahead and tell them, since they're going to have to make arrangements while you're on maternity leave and it seems like they are trying to clear any conflicts now. Since a lot of your coworkers already know, I don't see the harm.

  • We did not tell family and friends we were expecting until after the first appointment (8 weeks) and then I told my work around 13-14 weeks. That is just what we preferred to do. In your case, since people at work (I'm assuming your boss too) already know then i think it's ok talk to them about maternity leave. I think its probably too soon to set anything in stone but I think a conversation about it is fine. Definintely don't sign anything until you are much closer to your delivery date. A lot of things can change in the next ~32 weeks!
