Your Blood Pressure Numbers - A bit confused.

Okay, so I know that a healthy blood pressure is around 115/75 (used to be 120/80).  I also know that as you get further along in your pregnancy your blood pressure may go up, just naturally due to the extra blood flow in your body.

I have had some issues with higher blood pressure when I go see my midwife, more to the fact that being in a doctor's office terrifies me and my systolic jumps up to 140.  I have a cuff and stethoscope at home, take it every day, and it's always around 120-125/80-85.

I met with an OB (while my Midwife was on vacation) and he gave concerns about Pre-E and told me that if it doesn't go down then we need to talk about the worse case scenarios.  He called me tonight to get my numbers from the last few days and he seemed concerned that I was in the 125/85 range some days.

I feel like these numbers are somewhat normal and now he is making me more concerned than I need to be.

Curious...  What numbers are you ladies getting?

Re: Your Blood Pressure Numbers - A bit confused.

  • Most of the time my numbers are right around 117/75 to 120/80, so they are on the high end of average.  My dr hasn't said anything to me yet about pre-e but I think that conversation might be coming up.  I don't have any other symptoms of pre-e either.

  • I'm stuck in the hospital where they check my bp every 4 hrs or so and it runs from 105-125/60-90 with a very occasional 130 something and they've been fine with those numbers.
  • actually normal blood pressure has to do with your gender, height and weight.  there is no "set" number.

Having your blood pressure be high when you see doctors is called "white coat syndrome"  He was concerned because 85 is pretty high for a diastolic bp, mines usually 60.

  • at my last appointment mine was 106/65, but earlier in the pregnancty mine was 120/80 and no one said a word about it, actually the nurse said it was good. So if I were you I probably wouldnt be too concerned with 125/85.

  • Last week my BP was 124/76, which is pretty common for me at each appt.  I don't understand why he seemed so concerned for numbers, unless you are normally 100/70's.

  • my pre pregnancy bp and first trimester bp was 100/70. In the second it went into the 105-110 over 75 -80. It was 122/85 four weeks ago and in the last 3 vists it is in the 130's (132/135/138) over 97-98 range.

Some increase in bp is normal towards the last part of your pregancy. I don't have any swelling or protien in my urine. I have no headaches or headaches with nausea/vomitting or blurred vision. In other words I do not have pre-e but it could develop anyways so we keep an eye on it. Your best bet is to ask him directly what he considers good a good bp number.

  • Mine run anywhere from 138/80 to 165/95....I have pre-e & PIH, though. Since I've been on bedrest they've stayed in the 138/80's. When I sit up for longer than 30 minutes, or have to go to the bathroom, then they jump up.
  • My BP before I was pregnant was always around 120/80 so this isn't that much of a drastic change.  That is why I am confused about all the concern.

    Thanks for the help!

  • Your systolic # is great for where you are in your pregancy. He is likely concerned about your diastolic. 85 is getting high, but not high enough to freak out about. Mine had been in the 130s/80s range for several weeks, and my OBs were not concerned. They only became concerned over the last week when I have been getting readings at least once daily over 140 systolic. That prompted modified bed rest, a NST, and u/s to do a fluid check that I will have tomorrow. I am trying not to worry too much though, because I think the cause is more likely to be the stress related to scheduling our version and thinking about that, than related to pre-e.

  • 2 weeks in a row I've been 130/84.  My ob says it's a little high but not much higher than I've been all along, so she's not overly concerned.

This was my thought as well.  I am glad they are keeping an eye on it.  I just need to kick back and relax more.

    Thank you!

Exactly.  I wouldn't be concerned if those numbers are pretty much your baseline.  My doc freaked out last week b/c my BP was 122/86, but my baseline is 100/60 and I have been SOOO swollen lately and I did have protein in my urine. Once my 24 hr urine was fine, he just wants to keep an eye on my BP. My swelling still doesn't go away... ever.  I wouldn't be concerned for you at this point, just keep monitoring it. GL.

  • my numbers usually hover between 100-120/80-90 and my doctor hasn't expressed any concerns about it.

  • I"m not in 3rd tri yet, but my BP last time was 145/85 and I got yanked away from my midwife and stuck with an OB. Have not met her yet tho so I don't know what they are going to do about it.
  • At my last appt yesterday, my first reading was 140/80.  My ob wasn't very happy and took it at the end of the appt and it had gone down to 135, but he asked me to get a bp machine and monitor it.  He hasn't mentioned any worst case scenarios yet, but I'm glad that I feel more in control now.

  • around 110 / 60

    125 / 85 is considered high,,,but I don't really think it is that high

  • Mine has been around 120/70. If its any higher my Dr will check while I am laying Down and/or at the end of the appt. If your blood pressure is going up at your doctors office, I would think it would only get worse at the hospital when you are in labor... And makes sense that your doctor would be concerned.

  • Ask your doctor to retake your bp right before you leave. My doctor always has to take mine twice because it's high when I first get there......but by the time I'm done talking to him and going through the appointment, it's gone down. He said that it's normal for it to be up when people first get to the doctor......and only if it stays high is it actually considered high. If it goes down a short while later, then you don't really have high bp.

  • I'm 130/80 and my doctor is very concerned.  He wants me to rest more and if it goes any higher he's talked about inducing me.
