Anyone spot while on blood thinners?

I'm on Lovenox and have been spotting dark brown blood.  Had an u/s on Monday and they couldnt see any reason for the bleeding internally, baby looked healthy and had a strong hb.  However I am still bleeding.  I asked if it could be related to the meds and they didnt seem sure.  Anyhow, anyone else have experience with this?

Re: Anyone spot while on blood thinners?

  • Yes! This was happening to me, started around 13 weeks.  They didn't think anything of it till the bleeding became bright red, and at that point they thought it was just caused by a touchy cervix and partial placenta previa.  But the bleeding didn't stop or get better, so they finally sent me to a high risk doctor (with MUCH more powerful ultrasound machines) and they spotted a subchorionic hematoma SCH (placental hemorrhage) that my OB didn't spot at her office.  They put me on strict bedrest and took me off the Lovenox right away.

The high risk doc told me that if my bleeding is brown, then that means its old blood. But if you see bright red blood generally without having pain, you should ask your doc about going to a high risk OB office because you could very likely have placenta previa or SCH and not know it.

The good news is that you aren't seeing red blood! So I would try not to worry ( I know, easier said than done!) and I wish you the best.  I know how scary it is.  If you find out more info come back and update!

  • Thanks so much for the info!

I keep telling myself that brown is nothing but I also wonder how much old blood could possible be hiding in there :)

  • I had some around 12 weeks.  My OB said it probably wasn't related to the Lovenox, but not to worry unless it's bright red or I had cramping.  It stopped right after I called the OB (of course).

  • I actually had the smallest little bit of brown mucus last week.  I was constipated at the time, and the doctor thinks that "straining" might have pushed it out.  He explained that blood thinners make all glandular tissue much more sensetive and more likely to bleed, and since I didn't have any other signs of anything else wrong, the blood thinners were thought to be the cause.
