What is your opinion of water births?

This is my first baby, and I have to say that I am terrified of the delivery. The idea of doing a water birth occoured to me. I've always found baths to be soothing... But once I get to that point is it really going to matter?

Any thoughts or pointers would be appreciated!

Re: What is your opinion of water births?

  • Personally, I couldn't of done it without an epi. But I am a huge pansy. With that said, I did labor without an epi until I was 8.5 centimeters dialated. That was within an hour of getting checked out for the first time when I was admitted. In that hour, I thought I was dying and I was begging for drugs. The stupid nurse wouldn't check me for that whole hour and I was telling her I knew something was going on down there and it was happening fast. They eventually had to use the vacuum on my LO and I felt like they were ripping my vadge open to get in there and get her out. I seriously could feel them tugging me to open wider. Gross right?

If your truly interested in going that route, then do some more research and ask around on the trimester boards and even the birth stories board. Alot of women on there have posted their water birth stories.

Good luck in whatever you choose. And don't be afraid of the delivery. It'll be over before you know it and when you look at your LO for the 1st time, you'll forget all about the pain.

  • I'm planning to take a Bradley Method class, that starts tomorrow and they offer waterbirths at the hospital I'm delivering. I plan to put that option in my birth plan. I'm open to it. I LOVE a hot bath so I find it very soothing! We'll see what ends up happening though!

  • I had a girlfriend who tried it at Woman's Hospital in Baton Rouge.  She said the water was warm in the tub but she was cold in the hospital room so she couldn't get comfortable.  If you are planning on being in a hospital setting, see if you can try it!  If it doesn't work well for you, just get back in the bed :)
  • If I could have done it over again i think I would have liked to do it this way. The epidural did not help the pain in my back at all so I was mand I hated that I could not feel my legs.
  • I want to have a water birth REALLY bad!! I had no idea Woman's offered water births though.

I have to keep my weight gain under 25 pounds if I am going to have a natural birth at all. I'm short (5 foot) and small boned so they are afraid of me delievering an 8 pound baby. I have to keep it in the 7 pound range or I'm stuck with a c-section. Grr..

  • I would check with your provider.  My girlfriend delivered with Dr. Dickerson and he had a tub delivered to the delivery room.  She ended up going in the bed, but she sat in the tub for a bit to help her progress stay comfortable.  My girlfriend complained about the heat of the water vs the cold temperature in the room -- she said it didn't work for her... but it doesn't hurt to ask if you're planning on delivering there!

    Good luck!

  • We are currently TTC but waterbithing is something i am very interested in. I had NO idea womens did water births. I know the baton rouge general does (no offense but i dont want to have my baby there).. but there are NO birthing centers locally in baton rouge... (laffy is the closest) Keep us updated if u decide to do water birth!

  • I know my girlfriend had access to a tub!  It was portable, and they filled it with water and brought it into her room.  She used the same doctor as I am using (Dr. Dickerson) and he's great, if you're interested in making the switch when you do conceive!

I really wanted to be at Woman's, the specialty hospital, so I am... but I drive past BR General every time I go in for my appointments! The General is only about 3 miles from me and Woman's is about 10...
