D.C. Area Babies

Moms of girls

DD has a really itchy private area and it's red, it doesn't look like a regular diaper rash and diaper rash is usually near the butt anyway.

I know I can take her to the Dr but last time she was on antibiotics it really messed up her system and she had the worst poops and diaper rash (which is what maybe led to this but it's been over a month since she's been off anti-biotics, which she took for an ear infection).

We change her often and bathe her every night, we use California Baby only but sometimes don't even use it down there, using only water.

She only drinks water and milk so I don't think it's anything she's peeing out. She will sometimes go on the toilet (#1 and #2) and never wears a poopy diaper for more than a minute b/c if she doesn't go on the toilet we know right away she's gone and change her immediately. She does sometimes wake up w/ a poopy diaper though.

any ideas? anyone's DD gone thru this? She's 17mo old

thanks

Re: Moms of girls

  • Could still be diaper rash....Sydney has gotten that way one or two times. Urine can have the same effect. At night since she is sitting in a wet diaper longer I actually use diaper cream on the front as well as her bum..it gives her a little extra protection.

  • I second the pp--try diaper cream over her whole area--we have done that and it seems to help.  If that has no effect, then it may be time to head back to the doctors.  GL!

  • Could it be a yeast infection? Are there little red bumps? When I was BF and DD had thrush, she also had a yeast infection. If that's what it is, she'd need an antifungal cream (like Lotrimin) instead of diaper rash cream. If she's been on anitbiotics, this might be a reason for yeast vs. regular rash.

  • I am taking her in to be seen after work, I really hope it's not a yeast infection. I'm not BFing anymore. the worst is when she can't stop scratching it :(
  • Poor baby. :-( If it makes you feel any better, the yeast infection was really easy to treat. She could also get a dose of oral meds if the lotrimin isn't effective. I was shocked when she had it but the doc told me that just like adults, the babies don't always have enough pro-biotics to ward it off. A heavy dose of antibiotics could contribute to that.

But, I am clearly no M.D. :-) I'll keep my fingers crossed that it's something really easy to treat!

  • she has been horrible about eating yogurt lately so it's true she may not have enough pro-biotics in her system
  • They can get a yeast infection on their skin too, just from all the moisture from their diapers. DD keeps getting them because she still wears a diaper at night. Dr. prescribes Nystatin (cream) for it.

  • DS gets yeast infections, which is what it sounds like your DD has.  We treat it with Lotrimin AF and it goes away after a few days.  Not really a big deal, just uncomfortable for them when it's itchy.
  • In addition to pp, I have heard some kids get a rash when transitioning from diapers to underwear during PTing or from pull ups.  Did n;t know if that was the case but something else to think of.
  • SOunds like Yeast infection to me. We always have a tube of Nystatin (prescription) on hand since they flare up out of the blue. Very commonly they occur when DDs have been on antibiotics. When I took DD#1 for her 3yr appt, Doc said it was very common at her age to get them alot with the peeing in the potty and using underpants and all that.
  • If your DD wears cloth diapers at night, it could be related to them (and if she doesn't, then don't bother reading further).  DD started developing a rash like that on and off around the same age, and by the time she was 2 years old, we couldn't kick it.  Finally got some antibiotics and Mupirocin (sp?) cream that did the trick, along with disposables at night.  But every time we'd try to switch her back to cloth at night, it would flare up like crazy after just one night.  So we're resigned to using disposables at night and haven't had a problem since...they work like magic.

  • If she doesn't like yogurt you could try giving her a probiotic supplement.  I hope whatever it is, it clears up quickly.
