How many Tums are "safe"?

like in a 24 hour period?

Example: Every night I develop heartburn or acid reflux in my throat/upper chest. It's unbearable and very hard to get to sleep if I don't take at least 3 Tums. I only take Tums at this time of day and it is always only 3. I don't know how long this is going to go on for. I had it a month or so ago, it went away and now it's back.

Do you think 3 Tums a day for extended period of time is okay?

Thanks!

  • It says on the back of the bottle. I *think* it's 10 in a 24 hour period. You should be fine.

  • I think I am going to die then.  I live on these things. Believe me ....for 25 long weeks I lived without them...or any relief....before I buckled and now I cant live without them.
  • It says on the bottle and also depends on what type of tums you have. I think normal strength is 15 in 24 hours. While ultra strength is maybe 7.
  • Thanks girls. Off to down a few. :-)
  • I just take enough to stop my heartburn... I take probably about 20 a day, but the doctor just told me that it's extra calcium and baby will have strong bones. :)
  • I take at least three a day. I'd say you are good.
  • If you want a more natural approach try Aloe Vera juice.
  • Be careful with Tums...I developed kidney stones at 18 weeks pg and was in the hospital for almost a week.  My urologist said she wished OB's wouldn't recommend Tums so much, they are known to cause kidney stones in pg women.  40% of pg women develope kidney stones and a lot of times it was brought on by Tums.  (It happens this was not the case for me)  But, I was told NOT to take any the rest of my pg because they can aggravate stones as well, even if you don't know you have one embedded in your kidney wall.

  • Yikes on the kidney stones! I take about 20 a day, every day. So far they are the only minor relief. Tums and zantac...best friends for the past 8 months. I would totally ease up on them if I could...but alas without them I want to die. *sigh*
  • Another natural remedy to try is 100% pomegranate juice. I was really skeptical, but desperate for relief.  The stuff actually works!  I drink just a few sips whenever I feel the HB starting and haven't had a full blown case in over a week.

  • regular strength ones are 10 in 24 hours. Some days I take about that much, some days I barely ever take any. I usually take at least 2 sometime in the middle of the night though, my midwife said its the way the baby is positioned and laying down, bad mix.
  • You actually don't absorb much calcium at all from TUMS.  Calcium carbonate is a functional antacid and calcium requires an acidic environment to be absorbed.  So please don't think you're getting enough calcium/strong bones from TUMS -- it just doesn't work that way.  Calcium citrate is a much more viable option to meet your calcium needs.

That said, TUMS is effective as an antacid.  I've gone through 3 giant bottles through this pregnancy - but I don't delude myself that they are doing anything other than nutralizing my reflux.

The point about TUMS and kidney stones is also excellent.  Because they are not bioavailable, it does place excess stress on the kidneys, and if you are prone to developing calcium carbonate stones - this can exacerbate things.
