Working Moms-Tell Me About Commute/Hours, etc.

I know we have a lot of working moms on the board and I am curious about your daily routines (commute times, hours at the office, etc). I work as well, but have a very flexible schedule and live in a small town with little traffic/commuting time, etc. This may change, so I am curious about all of you.

What time do you leave your house in the morning?

How long is your commute to work?

What are you set office hours (M-F 8-5 with an hour lunch, etc)?

What time do you get home at night?

What are the total number of hours away from home each day?

Do you live in a high traffic area?

Did you try to purchase your home/live somewhat close to your work place?

How do you handle daycare drop off? Do you handle it, your DH, etc? Is this factored into your commute time?

Thanks so much!

Re: Working Moms-Tell Me About Commute/Hours, etc.

  • I will preface this by saying I am a slacker.  A lot of us come and go as we please, as well as my boss.  So I take advantage of this.

What time do you leave your house in the morning?  7:50

How long is your commute to work?  10-15 minutes

What are you set office hours (M-F 8-5 with an hour lunch, etc)?  8-5, hour lunch

What time do you get home at night?  5:15

What are the total number of hours away from home each day?  8, because I usually go home for lunch

Do you live in a high traffic area?  No

Did you try to purchase your home/live somewhat close to your work place?  Got my job after we bought our house.  But I purposely looked for work near our house.

How do you handle daycare drop off? Do you handle it, your DH, etc? Is this factored into your commute time?  DH is still laid off right now, so he is home with Allie.

  • I'll contribute since I know generally what I'd be facing if we had a child in daycare.

What time do you leave your house in the morning? 7:45.  I'm supposed to be at work at 8 but 8:15 to 8:20 is the norm for my arrival.  If/when we have another child and if I had to do daycare dropoff I'd have to leave around 7.

How long is your commute to work? Now without daycare dropoff 30 minutes.  If I had to drop a child off at daycare over an hour.

What are you set office hours (M-F 8-5 with an hour lunch, etc)? 8-5 with an hour lunch

What time do you get home at night? 5:30 but if I had to pick up a child from daycare it would be at least 6.

What are the total number of hours away from home each day? 10 but would be more if I had to deal with daycare

Do you live in a high traffic area? No.  We just live out in the sticks.

Did you try to purchase your home/live somewhat close to your work place?  No.  This wasn't exactly possible for us.  DH is part of a family business in another state.  I'd have to take a considerable paycut to work where he does IF I could find a job. So we work 30 minutes in from each of our offices.  So over an hour from each other during the day.

How do you handle daycare drop off? Do you handle it, your DH, etc? Is this factored into your commute time?  We are still not sure what we will do about this if/when we have another kid.  Me doing it is the most logistically difficult of our three options.  Our other options 1) Nanny which is the most expensive 2) Him doing it but there are logistical issues with this too.

    Thanks so much!

  • What time do you leave your house in the morning? about 8:50

How long is your commute to work? Less than 5 minutes if I came straight to work

What are you set office hours (M-F 8-5 with an hour lunch, etc)? 9:00-5:30 with a half an hour lunch

What time do you get home at night? Usually just before 6:00

What are the total number of hours away from home each day? 9

Do you live in a high traffic area? not really

Did you try to purchase your home/live somewhat close to your work place? we already had our house before I started this job

How do you handle daycare drop off? Do you handle it, your DH, etc? Is this factored into your commute time? I do drop off and pick up 99% of the time.  Daycare is just a few blocks from my work.

  • What time do you leave your house in the morning? The goal is to leave by 8:00 but 8:15 is more like the usual.

How long is your commute to work? I drop off at daycare first then back track to work. Work is half way between home and daycare. Total time to get to daycare from home is about 10 minutes if I hit the red lights.

What are you set office hours (M-F 8-5 with an hour lunch, etc)? 9-5 with hour lunch. If we leave on time I am at the office at 8:30 but don't really start working until 9:00. I'm hourly so I can make up extra hours here and there as needed. During tax season i can bring a lot of work home.

What time do you get home at night? Normally leave work at 5:00 and home by 5:30. Tax season I work until 6:00 three days a week and DH picks up John.

What are the total number of hours away from home each day? 9-10 hours out of the house. But, since I live close to work I go home for lunch and can get caught up on housework and get laundry sorted and maybe get a load going.

Do you live in a high traffic area? No.

Did you try to purchase your home/live somewhat close to your work place? Yes, no that I have gotten so used to such a short commute I couldn't handle a long commute!

How do you handle daycare drop off? Do you handle it, your DH, etc? Is this factored into your commute time? I usually do both unless I need to work late.

  • I will also preface by saying I have a pretty flexible work environment too (at least I think so :).  Hope I don't get proven wrong one of these days.

What time do you leave your house in the morning? --- Usually around 7:40ish.

How long is your commute to work? --- With daycare drop-off (most days) @ 45 mins.  When DH takes her, like 35 mins.

What are you set office hours (M-F 8-5 with an hour lunch, etc)? --- Yes, M-F, 8-5 w/ hour lunch.... but I usually only take 30 mins b/c I have to make up my late morning time, etc.  We have a lot of lunchtime conference calls too.

What time do you get home at night? -- Usually around 5:50-6 p.m.

What are the total number of hours away from home each day? About 10 1/2.  Wow, that really sucks when you put it in black & white.

Do you live in a high traffic area? --- YES.

Did you try to purchase your home/live somewhat close to your work place?---That's sort of hard to do, if not impossible, in Raleigh, IMO!  I would say that a lot of people work in either downtown or "center/inside the beltline" Raleigh.  Real estate super-close to those areas are generally big bucks or else less desirable areas to live.  Most of us have to live a little further out to have a decent home/yard/neighborhood.

How do you handle daycare drop off? Do you handle it, your DH, etc? Is this factored into your commute time?  -- I drop her off 3-4 days out of the week, and pick her up 4-5 days a week.  I guess you could say its "loosely" factored into my commute time.

  • What time do you leave your house in the morning?  I aim to leave about 7:30, but some times it's as late at 8.  Embarrassed

How long is your commute to work?  I can be at work in 15 mins if I didn't have to drop Eli off.  Add another 15 mins for dropoff and it's about 30 mins from the time I leave the house until I walk in the door at work.

What are you set office hours (M-F 8-5 with an hour lunch, etc)?  8-4 for the most part, no lunch, M-F

What time do you get home at night?  Usually just before 5

What are the total number of hours away from home each day? About 9-ish

Do you live in a high traffic area? No

Did you try to purchase your home/live somewhat close to your work place?  We had our home before I had my job :)

How do you handle daycare drop off? Do you handle it, your DH, etc? Is this factored into your commute time?  I do drop off and pick up.  DH works an hour away, and leaves the house before Eli and I are up, and before daycare is even open.  I also do pick up, but we end up getting home around the same time.  DH does do pick up on days I go to the gym or need to do something after work.  Daycare is really close to our house, so it only adds a few minutes to his commute home.

Not a working mom yet, but I am going back to work after maternity leave.

What time do you leave your house in the morning? 735ish

How long is your commute to work? 25 minutes

What are you set office hours (M-F 8-5 with an hour lunch, etc)?

M-F, 8-5 with an hour for lunch.

What time do you get home at night? 530

What are the total number of hours away from home each day?  10

Do you live in a high traffic area?  yes. I cut out the main traffic area on the highway by getting off an exit before and taking side roads.

Did you try to purchase your home/live somewhat close to your work place? DH works in the town we live in, and my commute is only 14 miles, so when we bought a house we stayed in the same town.

How do you handle daycare drop off? Do you handle it, your DH, etc? Is this factored into your commute time? If DH switches his hours to later (maybe 12-8), he will drop the baby off. If not, he may still anyway, since he has more leeway time in the morning. Then I will pick up.

eta: If my sister ends up watching the baby like we plan on, she lives around the corner, so it would only tack on a few minutes.

That is my concern with the Raleigh area, to get the house you want, you need to live a further out. That is why I am curious about commute times, etc.

  • What time do you leave your house in the morning? no later than 7 am

How long is your commute to work? around an hour

What are you set office hours (M-F 8-5 with an hour lunch, etc)? flexible schedule - but I usually work 8- 4:30

What time do you get home at night? around 5:30

What are the total number of hours away from home each day? 7- 5:30 so 10.5 hours

Do you live in a high traffic area? I don't but I commute into one

Did you try to purchase your home/live somewhat close to your work place? Nope we live close to dh's job (very close)

How do you handle daycare drop off? Do you handle it, your DH, etc? Is this factored into your commute time? DH does all of the morning routine and during football and track season I do the pick up. It is not factored into my commute since it really does not affect. Childcare is on the way home for me so I have to pass by there with or without droping him off.

Our situation would not work if we didn't have someone we love and trust to take care of Grady and the fact my dh works so close to home and childcare. And I have a pretty flexible job- I can work from home one day a week, we have flexible working hours I work for a very family friendly organization. More than likely this is all about to change due to the circumstances but for the past 2 years it has been great!

  • Oh yeah, I would definitely say more people live a little further "out" and have to deal w/ commutes.  I know people with worse commutes than me, for sure.

If you have any specific ?'s that I could help with/answer, feel free to FB msg me.  :)

  • What time do you leave your house in the morning? We are usually out the door at 8 on the dot.

How long is your commute to work? about 5 min if DH does drop off - 20 if I take DS in (I'll usually play with him a few minutes before I go).

What are you set office hours (M-F 8-5 with an hour lunch, etc)? our set hours are 8-5 M-F with a 1 hour lunch.  No one follows that though, most people come and go as needed if I need an hour and a half at lunch it's not a big deal or if I get in at 9 no biggie as long as my work gets done.

What time do you get home at night? 5:30 most days, in the summer it's more like 6:30 we'll always go to the waterfront and see what DH caught that day.

What are the total number of hours away from home each day? That depends on if I go home for lunch, so anywhere from 4 to 9 hours.  Many days I go home and do the dishes, start things for dinner, and toss in laundry.  If I don't go home I work through lunch or run errands.

Do you live in a high traffic area? Only on holiday weekends in the summer!

Did you try to purchase your home/live somewhat close to your work place?  We did, we wanted to live in town.  I'm about 2 miles from my office and DH is about 1 mile from his boat.  If you go to far out of town here then it's a 45 minute trip to the nearest grocery store!

How do you handle daycare drop off? Do you handle it, your DH, etc? Is this factored into your commute time?  It depends, if there is something I want to talk to DCP about, I'll make sure I take him or pick him up.  If DH isn't fishing and going to be in town for the day, he'll drop him off.  That way he gets dropped off later and gets one on one time with Dad!  For us the commute isn't really a big deal, here life takes place in about a 10 to 15 mile radius.

  • What time do you leave your house in the morning? 6:55

How long is your commute to work? 15-20 min

What are you set office hours (M-F 8-5 with an hour lunch, etc)? right now, 7:30-12:30..if I go fulltime with this company, it will be 7:30-4:00

What time do you get home at night? If I go full time, around 4:30-4:40

What are the total number of hours away from home each day? about 6

Do you live in a high traffic area? kind of, but not terrible at that time of the morning

Did you try to purchase your home/live somewhat close to your work place? n/a--we already lived in our home when I got this job. I was open to most any job at the time, but did give preference to the Cary/RTP area

How do you handle daycare drop off? Do you handle it, your DH, etc? Is this factored into your commute time? DH drops her off since it is onsite at his work. Right now I pick her up at 3:00. If I go full time, DH will pick her up at 5:00, in which case I would only see her from about 5:30 until bedtime (7:00) each day, as she's usually still asleep, or just waking up, when I leave for work. :-(

This is fairly true in GSO as well.  We don't live there but we do live in the surrounding area.

  • Well, although I'm a working mom, I'm not sure my commute will help given that I work from home :)

But I can give you some idea of DH's:  He commutes from Wake Forest (very north part) to RTP, leaves at 7 and it takes him about 25 min to get to work.  He gets home around 6:15.  No set hours.  We don't live in a high traffic area until you get close to the 540.  We did purchase our home with the commute time in mind.  We wanted to keep his commute to less than 30 min.  (Note -- we came from Manhattan and LA before this where my commute time was 1 hour and 15 min and 1 hour and 30 min so a 30 min commute wasn't that bad to us).

  • What time do you leave your house in the morning? usually around 8am (earlier if it's my "Early Friday" week or I have extra work to do).

How long is your commute to work? 30 minutues including a 5-10 min drop off/pick up at daycare. We're moving next week so that will increase my commute by about 20 minutes since our current daycare will be out of the way - which is why I'm looking for a new one.

What are you set office hours (M-F 8-5 with an hour lunch, etc)? Our "set" office hours are 8:45 - 4:45 with an hour for lunch. However, I usually work a little more each day or work through lunch. Also, we have "Early Fridays" where we get to take every other Friday afternoon off, but we have to make up that time during the week, so my hours are different then.

What time do you get home at night? If it's a normal work week (not my Early Friday week) and I don't have to run errands after work, I usually get home around 5:30.

What are the total number of hours away from home each day? usually 9.5-10. :(

Do you live in a high traffic area? I'm in the Triangle so that lends itself to more traffic, but I don't have to deal with the Beltline or interstate, so it's not nearly as bad as it could be.

Did you try to purchase your home/live somewhat close to your work place? Definitely. We just purchased a new house and the commute was one of our main deciding factors. I didn't want a commute any longer than 30 minutes (including daycare stops) and I didn't want to have to fight traffic on the major roads. Once we switch daycares, my new commute will be about the same as my current one.

How do you handle daycare drop off? Do you handle it, your DH, etc? Is this factored into your commute time? I usually drop DS off in the mornings and pick up varies depending on our work schedule - it's split pretty much 50-50 between DH and me.

  • I was a working mom for 8 months....

What time do you leave your house in the morning?  If I was dropping DD off at DC then 7:15 was my goal but most days it was around 7:20

How long is your commute to work? 25-30 min.  If I left earlier, it took me less time but if I left later then sometimes it could take more than 30 min.  Just depends.

What are you set office hours (M-F 8-5 with an hour lunch, etc)?

    Yes, 8-4:30

What time do you get home at night? if I picked DD up then it was 5:20-5:30 if i did not pick DD up it was 5:15

What are the total number of hours away from home each day?

    10.5 for the most part

Do you live in a high traffic area?

    Not really.

Did you try to purchase your home/live somewhat close to your work place?

We bought the house b/f I got the job.  We bought it for DH's job then he got a new job.

How do you handle daycare drop off?

I normally dropped off and he normally picked up.   There were exceptions though.

Do you handle it, your DH, etc?

    Team effort

Is this factored into your commute time?

    I factored it in.

  • I work full time from home, traveling every 4-6 weeks; but I'm replying because our set up might apply or be of interest to others.

What are you set office hours (M-F 8-5 with an hour lunch, etc)? M-W 9:30 - 6. Th, F: 9:30 - 5. No standard lunch, but I take a short break a few times a week.

What time do you get home at night? Anytime between 6 and 7 dep. on workload.

What are the total number of hours away from home each day? minimal, but when I travel I'm gone for 3-4 days and nights.

Do you live in a high traffic area? Not compared to when we were in SF! My commute was 1.5-2 hours each way dep. on traffic.

Did you try to purchase your home/live somewhat close to your work place? Nope. DH is based out of Atlanta, and my company is in CA.

For childcare, we have two babysitters come to our house 2 days a week, and one day a week she goes to childcare at a local mom's home. The other 2 days I'm working DH takes care of her. It takes a village!

  • What time do you leave your house in the morning? b/w 6:30am and 7am

How long is your commute to work? 20 mins

What are you set office hours (M-F 8-5 with an hour lunch, etc)? 7/7:30am until 3:30/4pm

What time do you get home at night? 4:30/5pm

What are the total number of hours away from home each day? about 10

Do you live in a high traffic area? it is relative, Raleigh to me is not high traffic b/c I'm from Miami but I do think it is high traffic if you are talking about NC

Did you try to purchase your home/live somewhat close to your work place? we wanted something b/w DH's job and mine.

How do you handle daycare drop off? Do you handle it, your DH, etc? Is this factored into your commute time? DH drops off and I pick up.  It takes me about 50 mins from the time I leave work to the time I pick up Nic and get home.

  •  I'll answer for when I return to work

What time do you leave your house in the morning? 7:45am

How long is your commute to work? 40 minutes including daycare drop off

What are you set office hours (M-F 8-5 with an hour lunch, etc)? 8:15/8:30 to 5:30.  It varies depending on my workload.

What time do you get home at night? DH is picking DS up and he leaves for work at 6pm T-Th nights, so I have to be home by 6pm.

What are the total number of hours away from home each day? approx. 10 hours

Do you live in a high traffic area? Traffic is pretty steady - a main road , but I do not have to commute on the interstates.

Did you try to purchase your home/live somewhat close to your work place? Yes, it was a factor, but not the only reason.  DH's commute is longer than mine, but he only does it 3 days a week.

How do you handle daycare drop off? Do you handle it, your DH, etc? Is this factored into your commute time? DS will be in daycare W, Th, F and I will drop off, DH will pick up.  I will begin my day earlier to get DS to daycare as well to ensure I can leave by 5:30 each day.

  • What time do you leave your house in the morning?  Between 7:55AM and 8:15AM

How long is your commute to work?  I work from home FT, but I drop Ella off at her in-home daycare MWF and DH does it TTH

What are you set office hours (M-F 8-5 with an hour lunch, etc)?  Very Flexible...I try to be at my desk at 8:30, rarely take a lunch, and leave to get Ella at 5PM.

What time do you get home at night?  We get home by 5:45

What are the total number of hours away from home each day?  N/A

Do you live in a high traffic area?  Yes

Did you try to purchase your home/live somewhat close to your work place? No - not really a consideration (even when I did commute)

How do you handle daycare drop off? Do you handle it, your DH, etc? Is this factored into your commute time?  See above - we really try to tag team as much as possible.  My schedule is very flexible, but there are times when I have an 8AM meeting face to face that I have to be at, so we just work it out.

  • What time do you leave your house in the morning?  right now it's usually sometime between 9:00 and 9:30, it needs to be more like 8:45 when I start getting more sleep

How long is your commute to work?  without dropping the girls off, it's less than 10 minutes

What are you set office hours (M-F 8-5 with an hour lunch, etc)?   I don't have set hours.  Right now I'm working roughly 9:30 to 5:00 or 5:30 with an hour lunch usually.

What time do you get home at night?  usually between 6:00 and 6:30 depending on how long I stay at my parents while picking them up

What are the total number of hours away from home each day?  9 hours or so
Do you live in a high traffic area?  No

Did you try to purchase your home/live somewhat close to your work place?  Yes

How do you handle daycare drop off? Do you handle it, your DH, etc? Is this factored into your commute time?  I pretty much take them and pick them up right now. DH takes Camryn to preschool on all the days that he doesn't have to be at work early.  But I could really use more help with taking and picking them up.  It's a lot to get myself ready, both of them ready, in the car and droppd off at my mom's.  Sometimes I'm exhausted by the time I get to work.  He will definitely help with getting them ready and dressed if he's home, but I could really use more help with taking and picking them up and it's been a topic of discussion at our house a lot lately, so hopefully we can figure something out here soon.

  • I have two different scenarios- the days when I take Emily to daycare vs the days when DH takes her

What time do you leave your house in the morning? if I take her: 7 to 7:30; DH takes her: 6:40

How long is your commute to work? the later I go, the longer it takes- can take as little as 20 min, but usually around 30 min if I have to leave later

What are you set office hours (M-F 8-5 with an hour lunch, etc)? M-F, and we have flex time, so basically I just have to work 8 hrs in the general time frame of 6:00am to 6pm

What time do you get home at night? usually between 4:30 and 5

What are the total number of hours away from home each day? 10ish hours

Do you live in a high traffic area? compared to other NC traffic, I'd say yes

Did you try to purchase your home/live somewhat close to your work place? no- but we are looking at houses now and I would like to stay where we are (since we can't afford to get any closer and I don't want to get any further away)

How do you handle daycare drop off? Do you handle it, your DH, etc? Is this factored into your commute time? if DH is off or goes into work at 9 or later- he drops off; if he works early I drop off. No I did not factor daycare drop off into my commute time above. DC is in a home on the other side of the neighborhood

  • What time do you leave your house in the morning? I leave at 7 AM

How long is your commute to work? 15 minutes

What are you set office hours (M-F 8-5 with an hour lunch, etc)? My normal hours are 8:30-5:30, I am temporarily flexing my hours to 7:30-4 with a 30m lunch until my boss says otherwise

What time do you get home at night? 4:30

What are the total number of hours away from home each day? Me-9.5, DH is in daycare about 8-8.5 since DH drops him off at 8 AM

Do you live in a high traffic area? Not really, not a lot of traffic on my commute

Did you try to purchase your home/live somewhat close to your work place? We bought it to be close to DH's work, then he got laid off! His new job is on the other side of Charlotte, and I work downtown.

How do you handle daycare drop off? Do you handle it, your DH, etc? Is this factored into your commute time? DH doesn't have to be at work until 8 so he drops Ben off at 8 AM.
