special diet before 3 hour glucose test?

i have to take the 3 hour...failed the one hour by 5 points :( My OB office sent out a sheet of a carb load diet for 3 days before the test, basically they want me to eat 5 extra servings of carbs each day. This seems like a lot to me...did anyone else have to do this???

  • Yes, but it's to prepare your body for the high sugar intake for the test. It's not really a good diet, it's just for preperation for the test. I have GD and I didn't fail by alot and I am diet controlled...there is no way that I am aloud to eat everything on that list for each meal...lol

  • My doctor wanted me to eat a "high carb" diet for three days before the test.  They considered 150+ grams of carbs high, which is probably a lot less than most people are normally consuming in a day.  It was definitely less than what i was already eating.

  • I had a 3 hr one back in july before I was preg, but I was actually told NOT TO eat many carbs for a couple of days before the test.
  • i was told i didn't need to change my diet, just make sure to fast 12 hours beforehand.

  • someone did a study on this, I can't remember where I read it, but it basically found that eating low carbs, same diet or high carbs right before the test would not affect the outcome of the GD test.  I wish I could remember where I read it for you, so I'd say it shouldn't matter what diet you're following.
  • I had to do the carb loading before the test and ended up passing with flying colors.  My doctor had me load on carbs so that when I drank the glucose solution that it wasn't as much of a shock to my system.

  • I was told to load up on carbs and failed the three hor by 5 points on fasting and 3 points on the 3 hour.  I would just eat normal.

  • I just barely failed the 1hr with each pregnancy but passed the 3hr both times.  I never had to do any special diet.

  • They gave me a diet that was 150+ carbs a day, which is not high at all. They just need you to have at least that many. I started looking at how many carbs were in my cereal, nuts, veggies and bread and it all adds up to 150+ very quickly, so I didn't need to do anything different. The outlined diet they gave me just seemed like a regular healthy one with whole grains, veggies and fruit at each meal.
