shoulder pain lap ideas

It seems much worse this time than last.  I've got heating pads on both sides, have been laying as flat as possible.

I was 4 hours into my percoset (ie 2 hours away from another one.) I thought I'd try to go lay on the couch since being in the same position on my bed was making me sore.

When you stand up, though, the gas rises further into your shoulder (I've been flat on my back for this reason since yesterday.)

It hurt so *** bad that I couldn't breathe and was hyperventilating, panicking, etc.

Thank God for my Dad and DH. Dad stayed with me all day to fetch stuff for me. he rubbed my shoudler under the heating pad until DH could get home (called and asked him to come early) to come do the relaxation stuff we learned in our childbirth classes (oh the irony.) Between the two of them I was at least able to breathe again and get semi-comfortable.

Any ideas to help the pain besides drugs, heat and propping up my feet?  I'm afraid to move again.

Re: shoulder pain lap ideas

  • Ugh, that sounds terrible, sorry!! I didn't have any shoulder pain with my lap so I have no ideas other than to take your next percocet a little earlier?

  • Sorry you're in pain! :(  The shoulder pain was the worst part for my laps. Other than heating pads and laying flat I've heard that drinking HOT liquids help to get things moving out of there. Good luck hang in there it'll get better soon!!
  • I don't have any ideas, but I really hope you feel better soon hon.

  • I am so sorry you are in that much pain.  I had god-awful shoulder pain after two of my three laps.  I'm sorry to say there was nothing I found that relieved it for me.  I just laid still on whatever side I could breathe on for three days straight.  Also took 2 percocet every 4 hours as well as 600mg of Ibuprofen every 6 hours.  I was so drugged up and still got very little relief from the shoulder pain.  You could also try a warm bath to relax you.

  • I'm so sorry you're going through that.  I had terrible pain after my lap.   Shoulder rubs are great, but I really just stayed sitting up, I feel like it worked itself out faster that way.   Do you have any icy hot cream?
  • My friend had really bad gas pain too and said getting up and moving around helped.

    Hope you find some relief!

  • I didn't have bad shoulder pain after my laps (this was my second-first was to remove my appendix), although the gas was def trapped in my abdomen area.  I was up and walking about 2 hours after surgery and kept standing/swaying to try to break up the gas asap...seemed to work, I was much better the next day.  Hope you feel better soon!

  • This is probably the last thing that you want to hear, but get up and start moving.  I had bad shoulder pain, too, and my DH who is also an RN pretty much forced me to get up and walk  around the house.  I thought i was going to sock him one, but i did feel much better after a few minutes and was able to get more comfortable when I did go to sit down or sleep.  I hope you feel better, hon!

  • You were right about the movement.  It was terrible for a few minutes standing up, but then it felt ok.  still sore, but better than it was.  I was up for a good hour and feel quite a bit better.  Thanks!
