Late Ovulation ?

Does anyone have experience with ovulating late and success TTC?

I have been charting and notice that I ovulate later then normal on a 32 day cycle. I need to make an appointment with my Dr, but need advice on what to talk to him about and ideas on what has worked for other people.

I'm almost 35 so I need to be a little more proactive with this situation and want to know my options before its to late.

TIA!

Amy

Re: Late Ovulation ?

  • I think anywhere from 24-40 days is considered a "normal" cycle. I had consistent 32-33 day cycles and always O'd on day 17 or 18. It took us 6 months to get pregnant, but even that is still within the "normal" range of 0-12 months.

  • My cycles were all over the place and very long.  Anywhere from 35-50 days, ovulation being as late as day 23 to 36ish.  We still got pregnant on our own, though it was a little more tricky and I went through a lot of OPKs.

*and like MrsHoyt said I was offered Femara too, but that was the cycle we got pregnant so I didn't end up needing it.

  • I ovulated late as well, not super duper late, but a few days later than "standard." We got pregnant on our 2nd cycle - I did take vitamin B (I think that was it) that cycle since i'd read it could help. That seems like so long ago - I can't remember what it was supposed to do!

  • I had anywhere from a 29 to a 32 day cycle and would O "early" (before the halfway mark), but would still have normal cycle length.  I watched my CF very carefully, as that was the big indicator for me.  My Dr. still doesn't quite believe that I got pregnant on day 13 of my cycle, but I know from temp and CF that I most certainly did!

All that to say, how late are you Oing?  Because it may not be abnormal...just not exactly halfway?

  • I was a late ovulator and Dr Seeker (BEST OBGYN, btw) gave me Clomid to help with egg quality issues by making me O sooner and stronger. That combined w/PIO and IUI worked! Good luck!
  • Yup.  I wonder though, if you're charting and know when you ovulate, why would it matter if it's later than (what's considered) normal?

Typically it's on day 23 of a 31 to 34 day cycle. Everything I have read says that we should be concerned about lining and quality of the egg on a later ovulation cycle.

  • I wondered the same thing, Duckie. I was told, basically, this (c/p'd from https://www.inciid.org/faq.php?cat=infertility101&id=1#59 ):

What constitutes late ovulation and can it cause infertility?

There is not complete agreement on this. You might consider "too early" to be cycle day 10 and "too late" to be cycle day 20. There are two problems with late ovulation. The first point is that you obviously you have fewer chances (less ovulation) over a given time period. Second is the fact that with late ovulation you may be releasing eggs that have not been matured properly. It is also possible that the other parts of the reproductive system (hormone levels) are not in sync with the egg. That is not to say you cannot conceive if you ovulate late---it happens all the time. It is just that your chances are somewhat reduced.

It has something to do with the ability to stick to the lining and quality of the egg with a later ovulation.  Charting and the OPK's are helpful so far, but not sure if they will be enough.

  • We are going through the same thing right now.  We've been trying since the fall (I'm also 35 and making a dr. appt to chat about late ovulation).  Thanks for posting, this thread helped me!  I hope you have success soon!
  • Also, in the case of the 31 day cycle, she'd want to O earlier to lengthen her LP.  My LP was anywhere from 8 to 10 days.

I would be more concerned about your short LP (luteal phase). Anything 10 days or less isn't long enough to give the lining time to build and the egg time to dig in. I think vitamin B6 can lengthen your LP?

    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • Thanks for the information, MrsHoyt and amycathy!  I had no idea that the quality of the egg could be effected due to late ovulation.  I'm also with rssnlvr in regards to the length of your LP.

    Best of luck to you!!

ETD:  Sorry, that probably didn't come across as intended.

Ah yes, that was it. Anecdotally it seemed to make a difference for me, but who knows if it really did.

    This.  B6 can help.

  • I have "ovulatory dysfunction." I ovulate late, which leads to weak ovulation, poor quality eggs and short luteal phase (9-10 days). Clomid (50 mg) did the trick for me. It made me O consistently on day 14 or 15. We still had to do IVF because of severe MFI.

  • RSSNLVR - Thanks! Off to pickup B6 today.

Duckie - No worries, I hadn't heard of this until I started doing the research.

Kim - Will talk to Dr about the Clomid on my visit.

Let me know what your Dr tells you, I would be curious to know what kind of advise you got.

  • ::coming out of hiding::

I second dr. seeker's office.  I don't ovulate on my own, so they gave me metformin + femara and I've had to go into the office on CD 12 for a lining/egg check.  they also gave me an HGC shot and tell me exactly when we need to do our "homework" - it's really nice to have the guesswork taken out of the situation!  anyway, my point being, you might want to see what your dr. says about options.

  • I don't know if this is relevant since I was still within a few months of coming off the pill, which I think caused a later O for me. However, in case it gives some encouragement, with this pregnancy, I didn't O until CD 22.

  • Will do! I would love it if you would update as well! This post has been very helpful. I pretty sure I have been o'ing somewhere around day 25 but I'm honestly not even sure if that is right. Temping doesn't work for me because of my work schedule and opks never produced a positive last month. DH nixed opks this month (don't ask). But if we don't get a bfp this week I am scheduling an appt :)
