another bottle question for BFers...

Probably some obvious questions, but I am getting a little anxious as Monday approaches and I head back to work.  I'll be taking DD to day care for a few hours on Thursday and Friday and I'm trying to figure out how to manage the bottle and BM supply.  I'm going to check kellymom.com as well, but I thought I get some advice from the wise women on this board...

For day care did you prep all the bottles ahead of time or put it all in one or two bottles and then provide additional bottles for the provider to pour a feeding's worth into?    How many bottles should I plan on sending with DD? Enough for as many feedings as I might expect? She's still BFing about every 2 hours at this point, but I'm guessing she'll end up nursing more with me than taking bottles at day care, at least at first and I want to eliminate too much waste of BM.

TIA!

Re: another bottle question for BFers...

  • I send one bottle ready for each feeding.  I'm not sure whether DCPs are set up to dole out the milk as you request, but I wouldn't chance it personally.  I would send as many bottles as you would expect her to eat.  If she doesn't take them all at daycare, you could always feed them to her at night and pump & freeze whatever you're not BFing that night until you settle into a pattern.

  • You really need to check with your DCP on their policies on this.  For DS, all bottles had to be individually prepped in advance and labeled with his full name and the date.  They would heat up a bottle when it was time to eat, and if he hadn't finished within an alotted time (I think it was an hour) they would throw the remainder away.  So we really didn't want to overfill bottles.  I would send in a bottle for each feeding -- but don't be surprised if, esp. the first couple of days, if everything is not eaten.

  • I send one bottle per feeding plus an extra, just in case.

  • I send bottles pre-made. I sent 3 4oz. bottles when we started, 3 5oz. bottles now. But, I have a pretty little guy who would prefer to just wait it out for me! My dcp also keeps a few bags in her freezer, just in case. A lot got wasted in the beginning, since he wasn't a fan of the bottle. Very hard to pour in down the sink in the evenings...but after about 2 weeks we weren't wasting anything anymore!

  • The first few days I would just fill the bottles with 2oz and send some extra for DCPs freezer.  I know it took my DD a few days to adjust and she was light eater during that time.  Eventually she took three 4 oz bottles (this later became three 5 oz bottles) after she settled in.  DD is also only in DC for 8 hours, this will vary if you LO is in DC for a different amount of time.
