Baby Names

Do you think of Katherine as a 1980's name?

3 people said this to me recently when I mentioned it was on my name list.  Is Katie (or Katherine) very 1980's?  I think of it as a timeless, classic name.  WDYT?

Re: Do you think of Katherine as a 1980's name?

  • I think Katherine is a classic.  We have "Catherine" on our list, but I think that's a little more old-fashioned when spelled that way.

Now, "Kathy" and "Cathy" are very dated, IMO.  1970s?  Katie is not.

  • I think of Katherine as timeless, but Katie is a bit dated to me. I guess I just knew a ton of Katies while I was growing up! I prefer Kate as a nn - it seems to age better.

This is pretty much how I feel, too.

  • Maybe a 1680's type of name, definitely not 1980's. What a strange thing to say...Jennifer? Michelle? Yes, 70's/80's. Katherine? Classic.

    This for me as well.

  • Katie is dated, but I love the nickname of Kate.

  • I don't think it's dated, I think it's a classic.  Henry VIII was married to 2 Katherines afterall!  His first wife, Katherine of Aragon was born in 1485, so you can respond, "yes, it's very 1480's" :-)
  • No.  I see it as classic too.

I agree taht Kathy is dated, but not Katie or Katherine.

  • That is such a strange comment on Katherine - it's a VERY old name...  I agree, 1480's maybe but not 1980's.
  • Classic, Feminine, Timeless...these are the things I think of when I think of Katherine. I think it's a great name and on my list if we ever have a 2nd girl (I'm putting the cart before the horse...we don't even have a 1st child yet)

  • I am a Katherine, NN Katie, and I love my name.  I always went by Katie growing up, but switched to Kate sometime in college.  I think it's timeless and ages well.  Not a fan of Kathy.

Hysterical!  I love it- very 1480's!!   I'm a huge history buff so I would use that line!

Thanks everyone.  I do love Kate too - I just thought kids would prefer Katie but Kate is a name that she can grow with and as parents, we'll just push Kate rather than Katie.

  • I love it. In fact, it is my top choice, but DH can't handle the difference in first letters between Catherine and the nn Kate. I don't think it's a big deal, but we moved onSad

  • I think Katherine, Kate and Katie are all timeless and classic.

  • Catherine/Katherine is classic.  The nn Katie is very 80's, almost every girl I know that goes by Katie was born in the 80's.  I think different nn for Katherine have been popular in different decades - Kathy 50's & 60's.

  • Totally a classic name.

Kathy is dated. Kate is the more modern nickname (or Katie.)

Actually, it was Catherine of Aragon, Katherine Parr, and Kathryn Howard.  So 3 Catherines, all different spellings.  But yes, very, very classic.

  • Perhaps they have their time period wrong. Or don't know much about naming traditions.

The first think I think of when I hear Katherine is my gggma who was born in 1860. I have a very German family.

Cathy/Kathy is very popular among the 50+ age group. Katie I think of as timeless.

  • i hate katie/ katy/ kathy but katherine and catherine have always been such classic names that they don't scream any certain time period. i'd go with the c spelling if you're worried about that connotation, though.

  • Hell to the yes. I have so many Katies as FB friends,  FB can't show them all to me when I do a search.

Agreed! Katherine is actually on my list but she would be called Kate...
