My son's name is Kai (rhymes with eye). When we named him that, we had seen and heard of the name before. Now that people meet him, many have commented on how different, unique, or weird it is. A lot of people have never heard of it before. I hope we havent doomed him to strange looks or a lifetime of mispronunciations?
Re: is his name THAT weird?
Not weird at all. I actually really like it (and I've heard it before!)
We get the same reaction about Kieran.
This. Plus, I actually think the 'uncommon' names are more popular lately-- at least on here and IRL with people who have recently had babies.

Trying again..
It's certainly not a common name, but it's not completely off-the-wall, either. I know a couple of Kais, including our Godson! I think it's a beautiful name.
Not sure how you could mispronounce it, either. Seems pretty self explanatory! But....people are dumb.
Yes it is very unique - I have never heard it before - but that doesn't make it weird. How rude that someone would say that to you. It sounds like a nice name to me.
To me, better to have a unique REAL name than one that is completely made up or is a traditional name with a funky alternative spelling to try to be "speshul."
My older son has a handful of friends named Kai - to the point where we identify them by their last initial. I think it's a beautiful name for a boy!
And as far as ease of pronunciation, "Eli" is the easiest name in the world, it seems to me - and we still get people calling him "Ellie" all the fricken time. Substitute teachers and medical professionals over the phone, mostly. You know, the people who are supposed to be able to read.
You should have seen the looks I got when I told everyone my baby name was "Jasper". A lot of fake "oh!"'s with that one.
LOVE Kai! DH is Hawaiian and it rhymes with our last name, so we couldn't use it.
Good choice!
DS has a totally Hawaiian middle name and when we told people his name at birth, they were like what the heck, but we love it and that's what matters.
