Trying to Get Pregnant

Clicky Poll: How long will you wait?

DH and I were discussing this last night, and we still haven't really decided when we would tell our close friends and family if we get pg. If we tell DH's mom, and tell her not tell everyone else yet... we both know that somehow word will get out, so we're thinking of holding off until I'm at least 2 months pg, but I don't know if DH and I will be able to contain our excitement that long.

Re: Clicky Poll: How long will you wait?

  • I'd really like to wait until I'm 12 weeks.  I don't know if DH will be able to wait that long though!
Off BCP March 2009 TTC since September 2009 3 rounds of Clomid + Trigger, 3 rounds of Gonal-F + Trigger, total of 4 IUIs - all BFNs IVF May/June 2011 - BFP! BabyFruit Ticker

  • I voted SS... I would most definitely tell my mom probably a week or two after we find out (after having to fib to her last cycle that I hadn't gotten my b/w back, and then having to tell her I was pg. with out her getting any of the excitement out of it was hard).

I would want my mom there if heaven forbid something bad happened again.

Everyone else, we would wait until at least 8 weeks when you get the first u/s.

  • We just had a 10 days old infant pass away in my family (cousin)... if by some miracle I get pregnant in the next few cycles, I think I'm going to keep it on the DL for as long as possible. There is a lot of pain and suffering, and it would not be appropriate for me to share that kind of joy with them for a long time...

  • I voted SS. We want to wait until we hear the heartbeat. I'm not sure when that would be, maybe around 8 weeks? We'll tell family and friends then but probably wait a little longer to tell work.

  • After the first trimester this time. Last time we told right away.

I would like to hear the h/b and have the first ultrasound before telling (we do get the NT scan done, and that is 12 weeks, right before the end of the 1st tri.). I own a doppler, so I should be able to get the h/b before then but who knows.

  • DH would like to wait 12 weeks, but I would be okay with 10. :)

You can get h/b on doppler as early as 8-9 weeks (usually only if you are VERY thin) but most won't try until 11-12 at the earliest. If you get an u/s that is different but early ultrasounds are not standard unless you are high risk, don't know when LMP was, or have spotting.

  • I have no idea....at this point I am really over speculating on how we'll do things if/when I get pregnant.  I did it the first few cycles, but now it just makes me more depressed when AF shows.

I would tell my bestie though, so we have someone to confide in, and maybe my one coworker I told we were trying (If morning sickness is an issue).  Otherwise, I don't want to let it out too early...in case something bad happens.

  • I guess I am a special snowflake.  :)  We'll probably tell our immediate family pretty soon after we get a BFP.  I'd like to wait to tell our friends until after the u/s at 7 weeks (I'm in a research study for women TTC, so this u/s is guaranteed & free).  I won't tell work until 13 weeks if possible.  With DS I ended up telling my supervisors around 8 weeks b/c they were planning for the next fiscal year and I thought they needed to know that I'd be out for awhile.
  • Im a special snowflake!

Our parents will be told right away. I would need their support if it ended badly.

Close close family, after we hear the heartbeat.

  • With DS we waited until 10 weeks to tell anyone.  Then around 10 weeks or so we told my mom and my step daughter.  We announced it to everyone at Easter dinner when I was right around 12 weeks.  I think we'd do the same thing this time.  It was kind of fun to have such an awesome little secret between just DH and I for a few weeks :)  But after having been through the first tri once, I have no idea how I'll take care of DS without having to ask for some help from family/friends, so that may tip them off.

  • I voted SS too.  I will probably tell my very best friend and my parents and sisters very soon after we find out.  Then I will threaten all of their lives if they say a word to anyone!!  And I WILL follow through on that :)

As for everyone else -- we will def wait until we hear a heartbeat and I would like to wait until I am 12 weeks.

BUT I live in a very small town, and word travels fast, and I mean FAST!  So probably any plans we have of waiting will go out the window!

  • I voted SS.

We want to wait until we hear the heartbeat. Because of my high-risk status, we will be doing ultrasounds much earlier into my pregnancy.

And depending on the advice and opinion of the perinatologist about the way the pregnancy looks in the early weeks, we may hold off.

It's hard to say right now.

I am SUCH a special snowflake on this one.  I am going to have to tell some co-workers FIRST before anyone else.

I work in retail and spend a lot of my time on a ladder doing visual things.  This will stop the second I get a BFP, so I will need to tell my boss and co-manager so they can help rearrange duties/understand WHY I am all of the sudden refusing to climb 10 feet up in the air.  I will not tell anyone else at work until 13 weeks.  I'm sure they will guess when I am no longer drinking coffee every 2 seconds of the day though.

I will tell my mom and MIL once a pregnancy is confirmed by the doctor.  Close friends and family won't find out until 13 weeks.

We're going to tell as soon as it's confirmed by a doctor. Although I'm sure I'll have to tell someone as soon as I poas if it's positive.

The first time around we only told immediate family right away.  Then two friends around 8 wks. Then everyone else after 13wks.

  • SS. We are planning on telling our parents and a few others - siblings and BFFs -probably within a week of finding out if we get pregnant.  Others we will wait until 10-12 weeks. We originally planned on waiting to tell everyone at 10-12 weeks, including parents/sibs, but we decided they should know early if, God forbid, anything should happen. We would need the support of those people, I'm sure.

  • We'll try to wait 12 weeks but I may cave somewhere around 10 weeks.  It'd be really weird if I wasn't drinking around our friends and pretending for 10 weeks could get old really fast.
  • I am a postpartum nurse and work with 50-some other women in the childbirth center. Since right now there is a pregnancy pandemic going on on our floor [5 pregos and 4 (that we know of) trying] everyone asks all ladies of childbearing age if we are pregnant. I don't know how long I could lie for, so the ladies at work will probably know real early after the BFP. I want to tell my parents and cousin (like a sister) as soon as we have a BFP cuz they will be our support. The rest of the family will know after our first u/s.

  • SS here. A lot of DH's family would be considered close family.

I don't think I could get away with hiding it from my mom/sister much past a couple days beyond peeing on a stick- I think we'd probably tell the general "close family" population around 6-8 weeks though and let it spread from there over the gossip network. Probably make a general announcement around 12 weeks for anyone who missed it.
