I never do. We got a new fridge yesterday, so Sunday I went through them all and pitched a TON!! I was shocked that some expired 2 years ago!!! (and we have only lived here for 2.5 years!)
Every time I go grocery shopping I will go through everything in my fridge including condiments. I'm really weird about things that are old. My MIL will eat something if it's a month or more old. I mean I have seen her eating salad dressing that had expired 6months prior.
I do a full clean out of the fridge once every month - I check expiration dates then too. I do the same with the pantry, rotating cans/items that have earlier expiration dates to the front. If anything is close to expiration and I don't think we'll use it - I take it to the local pantry for immediate use.
Having said all that - I started that process because I found so much food being wasted lol like can goods that expired a couple of years ago, like you did.
I also stopped buying the larger sized jars/containers of condiments. Although it is bargain to pay 50 cents more for twice the amount - if you don't use it up before expiration it wasn't really a bargain. So I always buy the smaller size unless I know we will need the larger one for something specific.
I figure if it isn't smelly or growing mold, it's fine.
Most salad dressings and things have enough chemicals in them that they don't go bad for a long, long time.
Ditto this. The dates are primarily there so that grocers rotate stock, they aren't true expiry dates. I give it a good 9-12 months after the due date before I toss (unless it'smoldy/smelly/tastes bad)
Yes, I check everything before using. I am kind of weird about expiration dates... doesn't mean we don't have old stuff in our fridge (which indicates I don't clean it out as often as I should) but if I do find something old I definitely don't use it.
I definitely do. We try to buy groceries with as few preservatives as possible, so I feel that it's important. We are pretty good about buying what only what we use, but I check the fridge contents regularly when I clean it out.
Ketchup and mustard, no. I know about how long it's been in there, so I don't feel the need. Most salad dressings we go through rather quickly, so I don't check, but if I notice it's one that hasn't been touched in a while, I will. Mayo and bbq sauce don't get used often here, so I do check them before anyone goes to use them.
I only check it if I know it hasn't been used in a while. If it's expired a while ago, I chuck it. Ketchup never lasts long enough to expire in our fridge though.
Re: Do you check the dates of condiments?
Almost never.
