Trouble TTC

thyroid meds?

My RE's office called me today and from my CD3 bloodwork, they determined my thyroid levels could be lower.  They said I was in the "normal" range, but that my levels are 5 and they like to see a 3 when a woman is trying to conceive.

They have me on Levothyroxine (starting tomorrow).

Has anyone else taken this or had this problem?  I googled potential side effects, but it's always informative to hear stories from "real life."

 Thanks!

Re: thyroid meds?

  • I am taking Synthoid which is similar to what you were subscibed, however I just started taking it on Friday. My RE wants my level to bE under 2. Right now I am at 3.3.

  • Yes, I had just about the exact same experience at first.  Hopefully yours turns out better than mine...

Had my blood drawn last May by my OB.  TSH of 5.02 which my OB told me was normal.  Started seeing RE in August who wanted to draw my blood again.  TSH came back at 3.something (close to 4 I believe).  He wanted it lower (between 0.5 and 2.5 or something like that) so I was put on a low dose of generic synthroid which I believe is the same thing you named.  Went back for bloodwork every month over the next several months, had my dosage lowered to where I was cutting pills in half, and eventually they told me to STOP.  My TSH was at a 0.0005 (which basically was unreadable, or so they said).

This caused me to be referred to an endocrinologist by my RE.  I started seeing him in December (stopped the Levothyroxine in November) and over the course of the next several months, my levels started normalizing themselves back out.  My last blood draw had my TSH back at a 2.2 I think, and my free T3 and T4 levels were normal again.  The endo wants to see me back in a couple months b/c he is worried about my levels swinging back to the hypo range, but I am so thankful everything leveled off on its own.  It's not normal to have that happen because from what I had heard most people take the pill and are fine.  (However, if it does work for you, it is something they will have you on for the rest of your life.)

Good luck.  The thyroid can be a very frustrating thing, as it takes 4-6 weeks between blood draws to get accurate readings.  The next step for me if this last blood draw came back abnormal was to have the nuclear thyroid scan and uptake tests which I was not excited about.  DH and I were going to start IUI in January, but when my December bloodwork came back and my TSH was still super low, the RE postponed all IF treatment until my thyroid issue was resolved.

And like I said, what happened to me is not typical....but you asked for real life stories!  Stick out tongue

  • Scratch that--Don't know where I got 2.2 from.  My TSH came back normal at a 0.68 this past month with T3 and T4 in the normal ranges too.

  • Thanks ladies!  UMichGirl - I'm so sorry for all that you've gone through.  So glad that your thyroid is where it should be!
