PCOS ladies please offer advice

Hi ladies! I haven't been on much over the last week and I wanted you to know that I'm still thinking about all of you and hoping for good newsSmile

I go in for my transvag ultrasound on Friday. The problem is that I HATE hospitals. I know that it sounds crazy since I'm going to be living in them for the next year or more but I have major panic attacks just thinking about going in. Anything that you can tell me about this type of ultrasound before hand will help me to prepare myself. (I'm sorry that I'm being so silly!)

Did you have to drink a lot of water before you went in? Is it quick?

Any advice will be very helpful! Thank you in advanceBig Smile

  • Hi!!  There is nothing to be worried about.  You actually don't need to drink water for a transvag u/s.  They have a wand that kind of looks like a dildo (pardon my bluntness).  They usually squirt some gel on it, put a condom on it, then insert. When they are moving it to the left and to the right to look at your ovaries, there may be a tiny bit of pressure, but not bad at all.

No worries!  At least you don't have to have a full bladder with them poking and prodding, right?  Wink

  • Oddly enough, to me it's less invasive than a gynecologist appointment. After they insert the wand, their eyes are on the screen (showing your ute and ovaries) the whole time and you're distracted cause you're listening to them and watching the screen yourself. And when you're expecting good news about how your stims are going you can't wait to get to your date with the vag cam, haha! Just don't psych yourself out too much, cause it's honestly not bad at all.

  • Don't worry, its very easy!  I always go to the bathroom right before it.  They insert the wand and then usually look at my uterus and check the lining, then look at my follicles.  I'm so used to it by now, and it's pretty quick and painless!

  • Don't let it worry you, like PPs said, it is much easier than an annual.  Don't drink a lot before you go and use the bathroom right before the exam as they want an empty bladder.

  • Yep, it's easy as pie!  I am fully draped and my lady bits are covered.  She has me guide the cam in so she really isn't down there at all.  The appt is quick and you will be so interested in what the u/s is revealing that you won't even be bothered by it!

Also, the nurse tells me to empty my bladder beforehand so no need to drink lots of water.

  • I don't suggest any additional water, you will want to be as empty as possible. I would take a vaginal u/s over a pap ANY DAY! It's so easy and the most you ever feel is a little pressure but not even much at all.

I personally refer to it as the dildo cam and that thing has become my new best friend finding follicles and etc..   Don't sweat it!

  • I was so nervous for mine too.  I told my doc that it was my first time and she was extra gentle.  It was nothing.  Now I am a pro!

  • This might sound dumb but isn't this a routine exam with an RE? My doc does this at every appointment. I've never had to go to the hospital for it, she does it in the office. Do most people only have it done once or twice?

  • I'm not sure how often you have to have them, but I do know that my RE won't do them in the office. I had to schedule through the hospital (I don't know why). I also called today to double check and they said that I need to drink 32 oz. an hour before. I'm so confused!Huh?
