What to expect with GD test on Thursday?

I know I drink a drink in 5 mins and then have a blood test right? Do they call with results or do you know at your appt? will I feel like crap afterwards? What happens if I fail? A special diet and a 3 hour test? What does it mean for the baby? Sorry I have no clue

You have the drink and an hour later they draw blood. It was entirely uneventful and the drink wans't half as bad as ppl had made it sound. I doubt you'll get any results that day; I didn't get mine until my next ob appt. Unless of course you get your blood drawn in your ob's office and they always give you results..?

You'll feel fine afterwards. It's just a sugary drink.

You drink the drink (it's gross, like sugary sweet soda) and then have to wait an hour before you get your blood drawn. You're not usually allowed to leave the lab/doctors office until the blood is drawn b/c the sugar stuff can make you woozy, so bring a book.

They'll call with your results in a day or two. If you fail you go back for a 4-hour or 6-hour test. (Drink soda stuff, have blood drawn each hour for 4 or 6 hours) If you have GD they will give you dietary restrictions to avoid problems for the baby.

oh its just like sugar water or something...I thought it would be real thick syrup and make you feel like crap after drinking it...good to know thanks

I didn't drink mine in 5 minutes. Yes a blood test. Didn't call me. You feel gross IMO. If you fail then 3 hr test. GL!

I thought it was super, super easy. It literally tastes like Sunkist, and then an hour later you get your blood drawn. I took mine in the morning, started drinking it at home, arrived at the lab an hour later, did the blood draw, and then went to work for the day. So easy, and good luck!

I liked my glucola. :-) I didn't feel like crap after, make sure you eat some protein after your test.

Ask your doctor and/or nurse about the results. Ask them to call you either way or ask when they will call you by if you fail. I got my results on the spot. It was a finger prick, but sounds like most people have to have a full tube from the anticubital drawn.

Im sorry for these questions...feel so dumb....so if I were to fail (hope not) am I diabetic? or is it different in pregnancy? I guess the whole diabetic thing is throwing me off...I thought that was like a life time thing......

No, gestational diabetes is a condition that occurs in pregnancy and goes away after delivery. Google it, there's a ton of info on it. You are at higher risk for GD if there's diabetes in your family, but it won't mean you have diabetes for life.

I think it is different for everyone. For me it was horrible, and I nearly cried when I found out I had to do the 3 hour again. The juice is nasty IMO, and it didn't help that the nurse was rushing me to finish it. The whole time I felt dizzy, and empty from not eating, like I was gonna puke. In fact, if you read the bottle, it lists nausea and vomiting as common side effects. I hope it goes better for you than it has for me.

Mine was pretty uneventful, like some pp have described. They told me that no news was good news, but would get a call if I needed to come back for the 3 hour test, and get a letter if I was anemic. I never got a call, but got the letter! So, now I take iron supplements.

I didnt feel too awful with the drink, but I did feel drunk off sugar! I felt like I was talking up a storm to the NP and Doc during my actual visit after I drank the stuff.

Stupid Bump - I was saying...

The drink isn't that bad. It has 50grams of sugar, so the equivalent of 2 cokes. I had to drink it in 5 minutes, wait one hour, and then have a blood draw. I got my results the next day b/c I failed and I am anemic. I felt okay during the one hour, just a little icky afterwards but all I had to eat before it was a sugary bowl of cereal. I didn't know I was having the test that day until I got to my appt. The one hour was pretty uneventful.

Now the 3 hour sucked! I threw up the first time about 25 minutes after drinking the juice and had to redo it today. Luckily, I made it through with the help of Zofran. The 3-hour test drink has 100 grams of sugar and you have to fast before it. My body does not approve of that combination!

Had mine today. I had no problems but I did feel the sugar high. It IS like the syrup that we used to use for making drinks for the kids at daycare and church nursery that hasn't been diluted. It's not gross tasting, just thick and very sugary.
