Success after IF

has anyone here cooked yellow squash for baby?

Does it need to be peeled? I cook it for me with the peel intact, and I read in a baby cookbook that zucchini can be cooked with the peel, but I can't find any source on how to cook yellow squash.

Re: has anyone here cooked yellow squash for baby?

  • We made a Buttercup squash and I think we just put it in the oven whole and then split it open and scraped it out when it was cooked.

Squash has probably been our biggest hit when it comes to homemade foods!

    Good luck!

  • Aiden eats it with the peel just fine and really likes it.  He's on finger foods now, so we just steam it sliced and feed it to him that way.  But before, when he was just doing puree's, we'd steam it and then just puree them in the blender whole.  I don't think wholesomebabyfood says to peel it either.  We do the same with zucchini.  Butternut squash we cook like PsychedForBaby-- split in half, bake, then scrape out.

  • I read somewhere that you should peel it before 8 months, so that's what we do. I wish I could remember the source (I use several books and wholesomebabyfood.com), but it just said that some babies may have trouble digesting the peel which can cause stomach upset, gas, etc.

eta: Wholesome baby food says "2. Wash squash thoroughly and cut into small slices or chunks. Do not remove skins. (*You may remove skins however an infant of 7-8 months old should be able to digest squash puree with skins on)." That's probably where I read it.

  • We've never peeled it, but we did make sure to cook it really well when Cal was that age, so the peel was nice & soft.
