Trying to Get Pregnant

SA costs and insurance

We got a bill today for DH's SA. The cost for it was the norm for what I've heard. However, has anyone had one covered by their insurance?

I'm just trying to think ahead, if we have to do another one for the urologist, trying to figure out costs. I'm wondering if it would be covered if a urologist ordered it but not by my MW. Thoughts?

Re: SA costs and insurance

  • DH primary doctor did his. He had other tests done too (blood work/ultrasound) but we only paid $14 out of pocket. The original bill I saw was a little over $500 I think. For us it was cheaper that way because at the time I had Kaiser and they didn't want to see DH at all until it had been 1 year of us trying.

  • I'm getting close to the time when I think we'll do an SA - so I was researching that today. DH's SA is covered by my insurance completely. I'm wondering if the urologist orders it because they are investigating something medical that COULD be related to the fertility that your insurance would cover it? Because then its medically necessary? That's just my thought.

I'm wondering about that too. I guess I just hoped it was covered because my insurance said that they covered all lab work despite what they coded it for. I should probably call.

  • DH's SA cost us $125. It was completely OOP. Our insurance did not cover it. We can use it as a medical expense on our tax return next year though.

  • hey hun! If your insurance covers diagnostics, it should be covered. We had to pay for ours up front & then we were reimbursed for it later. I would call you insurance & if they say diagnostics for infertility are covered, any SA you do (regardless of whether it's through a urologist or MW) should be covered.

  • Hmmm, I'm not too sure. My OB/GYN ordered it for my husband. His insurance covers all fertility testing, so that's how they rang it. Ours was EXPENSIVE (compared to the other girls). It was about $300. We got two charges, one for the office doing it, and the other for the lab. I agree with the others, you can call to double check.
