I'm not sure what exactly it is..but I had heard from another person here that it sucked. They recommended adding the item to your BRU registry (if you have one) and marking it fulfilled, then taking it in and they'll look it up on your registry. It has worked each time for me so far.

To be fulfilled, wouldn't someone (or you) have had to purchase it using your registry bar code?

No because I did the same thing, you just put a one in the purchased box and hit update, it was really easy.

No you just put a 1 or however many of that item you received and hit update, it was very simple.

No, you can edit your registry online and mark things as fulfilled yourself. For example, my mom bought me a video baby monitor for christmas on Amazon. I went and added the same one to my BRU registry and marked it as fulfilled, this way when people looked at my registry they could see that someone already got me a monitor, so I didnt end up with any additional monitors.
The only things this might not work for is clothes (or other in store only items).... I got a ton of clothes in 0-3 months with no receipt and tried to do an even exchange for bigger sizes in some stuff and they said no way. I couldn't find a lot of the exact clothes online and tried to just add them with the gun thingy in the store, but it wouldn't let me update them as purchased..
I had no problem returning an item without a receipt that wasn't on my registry. When they scanned it the price came up really low, but they agreed that it was low (without us even saying anything) and put in the current price for the same item on the shelf and gave me a gift card for that amount. I was really surprised that I got full price for the item because it looked like they had changed the packaging of the item since mine was purchased.
It took 3 1/2 long years, but we finally got our little miracle!

I heard horror stories too about how terrible their policy was, but I went in this weekend w/o a receipt and they scanned the item and cheerfully handed me a credit slip - more than fair in my opinion!
Made returns on Saturday, we got gift cards for anything we didn't have a receipt for and cash for the things we did have receipts with. Gift receipt gave us gift cards too.
