Do shrinking boobs=dwindling supply?

Hi Ladies,

I know I'm no longer engorged, but this is the smallest my breasts have been since before I got pregnant (I was a 34B, and got up to a 36DD toward the end, now am back to 34B).  I don't mind the "cosmetics" of it all (boobs are now sort of deflated), I just want to make sure this doesn't mean I'm loosing my milk or something.  DS is still eating fine and peeing/pooping so I assume he's getting enough, just would like some reassurance, especially since the change in size was so sudden and so dramatic.  TIA!

  • That didn't happen to me personally, but to two people I know, and they had way more milk than I did! LOL, and if you think about it, plenty of women with smaller breasts have more milk than they know what to do with. :) I personally have larger breasts, and barely had enough supply wise.  I wouldn't worry unless you see problems in supply, or your LO!

  • Mine have gone down a LOT--as in needing to buy more nursing bras a lot.  The same thing happened to my sister, actually, right around the same time, and it was right around the time that her supply actually skyrocketed.  Seems to be the same for me.

My lactation consultant says that the "shrinking" can happen when your supply starts to regulate--when you're actually making the milk for each feeding, not before (like engorgement).

So long as you're still getting plenty of diapers, and he's gaining weight, I'm sure you're fine!

  • I've gotten back to my pre-pg size but have more milk than ever.  I'm still amazed by it.  I pump once a day and I'll often feel "soft and empty" and think that I won't get much.  I start the pump up...and bam! out comes all this milk!

If your LO is still doing great then I bet your supply is right on target!

  • Nope- boob size has little/nothing to do w/ supply.

  • Size has nothing to do with supply.  You likely lost some fat in your breasts which is a common place to lose it.  The fat level has no relation to how much milk you produce.
  • Ditto everyone, no relation. I'm like you, and I have plenty of milk, more than DS needs! You just don't get to the point of engorgement cause you're body has things more figured out.

I occasionally get engorged now, but that's because DS is sleeping 6 hours straight at night.
