What are your plans for summers when your kids are older?

This is something I worry about!  DS is ok going to his school during the summer for now, they have a camp that isn't as structured as their school year, but still has lots of learning involved.  But, even last year he was pretty bored.  Although, I think that they take them to the beach 2x a week when they're older so maybe I could keep him there for another couple years if he likes it this year.

We have a few camps with before/after care and some that bus kids, but they are $$$.  Many are $$$ and only operate between 9:30 and 3:30.  =O

I want my kids to have a fun summer experience, but man, so many of these camps are way more expensive than daycare and the kids are older!

    Good question.  I have a long way to go before needing to worry about this but it has certainly crossed my mind!  I was hoping to be able to find some summer programs that didn't cost a million dollars.

    I don't know yet.  I figured I'd start worrying about that as the time draws closer but I'm still a few years away from that.

    A lot of my friends (and I) did summer nannying in high school/early college. Took the kids to the pool, etc.

    I'll probably look into that.

    I have thought about this a few times, and honestly I have no idea!  I dream about the time where I won't have to pay for daycare (it will be like winning the lottery) but then I'll have to worry about summers!  My sister and brother in law are both teachers and live a few miles from where I work, and even closer to where DH works, so maybe my kids can go to camp in their town and then they can watch them for a few hours before we can get to them?  I just don't know!

    As much as I love my job and I enjoy working, sometimes I wish I could just be a SAHM :-(

    Well DH works from home so its a non issue for us. Over the summer when we were little my mom had us in daycare over the summer until we were 13. They took us to the pool 3xs a week, movie once a week, and had some activity scheduled the other day. It was the same daycare that picked us up after school, though.

    I don't know if I'll be here then, since it's a way off, but my firm daycare does a school-age summer camp program that all the kids love.  It's not too expensive, since it's the firm center.

    I babysat a summer when I was 17 and the kids and I had a blast.  If I can find someone responsible, I may do that.

    I am more worried about after school care than summer care, really.  What am I going to do then??

    While in daycare, they are there year round and in the summer, they do a special camp program. Starting the summer before Kindergarten (my girls are/will be doing PreK through the school district) they have a summer program (same group that does before and after school during the year).  They will go to that most likely through the summer before 5th grade - they do a bunch of field trips and special acitivites plus they go swimming once a week.  After that I am not sure - my DH and I both spent part of our summers at over night camp - which they actually start during elementary school so they may do that along with the school program but its expensive so we will see.  Other than that, we are going to get creative with other camps and programs, with our work schedules, with help from family and worst case - we would hire a nanny or something to be with the kids.  I think back to when I was in JH/Middle school and HS and my mom left us home pretty much for the summer - I know we worked and I had cheerleading stuff in the summer but we'll have to see when the time comes.  I work from home now but who knows by then.  Lots of summer sports and other camp like stuff.  My nephew who is 18 and graduating HS took some long trips through the camp I went to in MI (Alaska one summer, Western Trip another) that were 5-6 weeks and last summer he worked at camp so that is also an option.
