Question for Breastfeeding mamas

Wanted to ask about birth control...if you're nursing are you taking bc and if so....which one?

I'm currently taking a pill, but it has me all freaked out since you pretty much have to take it at the same exact time.

Thx

Nat

Re: Question for Breastfeeding mamas

  • I'm pretty sure that if you are bf there is only one bc pill you can take that is safe.  I got a rx for it and never got it filled because it made me nervous and I didn't want to start in with artificial hormones since mine were still way out of whack.  I looked into an IUD and decided against it.  We just used condoms.

  • We never used birth control because I never ovulated (so bf'ing was enough birth control for me) and also didn't mind having  more children.

I had looked into getting an IUD after Nate because Eric said he wanted to wait a few more years (I think paraguard is safe while bf'ing) but then he changed his mind -lol-

I didn't get my period back until Andrew was 12 months and 3 days old.  I SAHM and breast fed on demand.

If you pump or your baby STTN early, then you are more likely to get your period back sonner.  Of course I had a friend that got back her period at 4 weeks pp despite nursing on demand.  Everyone is different!

And ditto Rach, the mini pill is the only one that is safe when BFing because BCP can affect your milk supply.

  • I am on the mini pill and I do loathe taking it at the same time each day, but I've yet to have AF and I BF on demand, so I wonder if I'd be ok without the mini pill....Wink

But just for peace of mind, I'll continue taking it for now....but we're open to start trying for another baby in early 2011.

  • I'm not taking BCP.  Matthew is almost 10 months and I still haven't gotten a period back .  We cosleep so he nurses throughout the night.

But as everyone has said mini pill is the way to go.

  • Even though I have been nursing on demand since day 1, I still managed to get my period 5 weeks pp. Lucky me Angry

I am not taking BC pills. I didn't want to mess with the hormones will BF. we are using condoms, which we hate, but I really didn't want to take anything that would mess with my supply.

  • Thanks ladies, with Mateo I got my period when he was 4 months old even though I nursed on demand :( I didn't take any bc pills but wasn't nervous about getting pregnant again, now that I have two I am not ready for another and not sure yet if I will ever be.  I'm taking the mini pill now, and breastfeed on demand, and thankfully have not noticed any change in my supply ;) Just curious what everyone else was doing.  My doc mentioned even though I was nursing I could still get pregnant and I am definitely not ready for that ;-)
  • I got pregnant with Graciela while I was still nursing Cedric, although not round the clock (he was already 14 or 15 months).  Graciela is still nursing, and we're just using condoms.
  • I'm on the mini-pill. I pretty much EP- Cooper nurses maybe once a day? The second week I was on it, my supply tanked. It was awful. I was going to go off it, but I absolutley should not get pregnant again for at least another year, so I tried drinking more water, and that seemed to help.

I don't stress about taking it at the exact same time. Cooper gets vitamins with his second AM bottle, so I take mine then. What helped me was getting one of those pill cases, and I take my PNV, DHA and BCP every morning now. HTH!!

  • I met with my doctor last week to discuss options.  I really don't want to go on the pill or any hormones  I'm just so irrsonsible when it comes to that.  I've decided on the IUD and have to choose between paraguard and Mirena.
