Postpartum Constipation

This is embarassing, but... is anyone else still constipated?

In the hospital, they told me I might get constipated and gave me a month of stool softeners. I did, but then it never went away. I asked about it at my 6 week appointment and the nurse told me to eat prunes.

I'm still eating prunes daily and my baby is 9 1/2 weeks old... seriously now. Even with prunes, I go like every third day and it's hella painful. When will this stop? Is it at the point that I should just give up on it being birth-related and just call my adult medicine practitioner?

Re: Postpartum Constipation

  • Yes, I got very bad constipation PP and just went off stool softners last week (at 8 weeks.) I developed internal hemorroids at 6 weeks PP, not fun!! I've been eating Fiber One bars and taking metamucil too, it seems to be helping but I'm still not regular like I was before baby. Sad

  • I would go to your reguIar doctor.  I was constipated but it was caused by the pain medication I took for my c-section.  I quit taking the meds and increased my water intake because I am breastfeeding and voila!
  • I've been eating two FiberPlus bars a day and then the prunes! Maybe I should add metamucil, but that seems like a lot....
  • I am desperate. Over 3 months PP and still so constipated with fissures. I had never been like this either. What ended up happening with you guys?
  • Use Mirilax!!    Less gas.  Works the same.  Doesn't taste bad.  Can add it to foods.  Fissures are miserable.  Use Aquiphore (think I spelled that wrong).  This helps to ease the BM movements and seal the fissure to an extent.
