I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before (I've mostly been posting on the birth month boards and lurking over here), but I recently had an awesome experience and wanted to share.
So, I decided I couldn't wait until 20-21 weeks to see LO and find out the gender (which is when my OB said my next u/s would be), so at 15 weeks 6 days I booked an appointment at First Peek Ultrasound in Oak Park. It's a place that does 3-D ultrasounds, prenatal massages, etc. And because they're not medical ultrasounds, you don't need an Rx or referral from your doc, and they're pretty cheap. They do gender checks (for only $40) starting at 15 weeks, and if for some reason they can't determine the sex you can come back as many times as necessary (free of charge) until they can. This is what happened to me. The tech said she was 70% sure LO is a boy, but the umbilical cord was in the way, so she wants me to come back in 2 weeks to find out for sure.
The facility itself is really comfortable and homey. They laid me on a very comfortable bed, and DH got to sit on a nice leather couch, and I got to see the whole ultrasound happening on a big flat screen TV mounted on the wall.
In addition to the pictures you're already getting, they also offer other add-ons, like a DVD of the session, or a teddy bear with a recording of the heartbeat inside (I got one of those and listen to it all the time).
Anyway, I'd share for anyone who's in the market for any of their services. Check them out at https://www.oakparkultrasound.com/
You can also book your appointments online.
