when do u bring up maternity leave at work?

I know it's kind of early, but it just came up with reference to tutoring.  Our tutoring program just ended and it starts again in October so some ideas/changes were being discussed for next year.  However, I mentioned that I'll most likely be on maternity leave around that time.  It was no big deal.  But, when should I formalize maternity leave.  It's a little different working for a school because I figure I should do so before the summer since school starts again in late August and I'm due in October.   Also, I want to bring up that I'd like to work over the summer if possible (to earn some extra cash).  Should I just bring it all up at once after spring break since I'll be in my second trimester then?

  • You are probably right that it depends on the school. I told my work that I was pg at around 13-14 weeks. I didn't have a deadline to submit my maternity leave papers. It just had to be in and processed before I was planning on being out. I think I turned mine in about 3 weeks before I delivered.  My baby was born Oct 4 and I came back to work Jan 4. In your case, I would bring it up all at once and definitely make sure everything is in place before school is out for the summer.

  • I didn't tell my school until I was out of my first trimester.  Ask your office manager at school and they can and will guide you through the whole thing.  I was due the second week of school so I formalized mine about a month before school was out in case I went early.  Also, for FMLA leave they will have to have your doctor fill something out.  If you are in Broward, all of the paperwork is located on the benefits website.

  • Thank you for the info!  I'm in Miami-Dade at a charter so I'll ask the office manager about it soon.  It seems like I don't have to fill out any paperwork soon, but I'll bring it up after the 1st tri (right after spring break) just to make sure my duties/responsibilities for the summer and the next school year are clear.
