Baby Names

name sound like a country song title?

My husbands family has stuck to female names starting with M and male names starting with J for over 50 years now! We are excited to continue the trend, and have fallen in love with the name Memphis for a little girl. I have been wanting to give a little girl the middle name Rain before we knew we were expecting but I am afraid that Memphis Rain sounds like a country song!?!?

Re: name sound like a country song title?

  • I really like Memphis, but to be honest....Memphis Rain does sound like a country song to me!
  • Loading the player...
  • This reminds me of a favorite line from the show Roseanne...

"We have a tradition in our family. My grandmother's name was Ruby, my mother's name was Amber, my name is Crystal. I was thinking, this must stop".

Memphis Rain does sound like a country song title. Memphis just doesn't work as a name for me. Rain is good though.

P.S. You should really change your screen name. Having your whole address there is like asking for Spam.

  • Memphis is super cute, I like it, but think it def. needs to be grounded with a "normal" middle name.Memphis Rain is wayyyyy to much for me!

     Memphis Katherine

    Memphis Adriana

    Memphis Evelyn

Something like that sounds much more down to earth. I like the tradition too btw. It gives you leeway, but also connects the whole family

  • Memphis Rain definitely sounds like a country song.  While Memphis is NMS, I think it's a better idea with a nontraditional FN to pair with a more traditional MN.

  • I really like the name Memphis, but I do not care for Rain as the middle name.
  • Isn't Nicolas Cage's character on Gone in 60 Seconds name Memphis Raines? That's the first thing I thought about honestly. Other than that, I guess it kind of sounds like a country song, but I don't think it would have popped in my mind without you mentioning it.
  • Memphis is kinda cute :) but please don't name her mn 'Rain'... at least not with a name like Memphis!

  • Definitely sounds like a country song...or a cheap cologne.  Memphis is not my style, but Rain is the dealbreaker for me.

  • please don't mix an adjective and noun in your child's name. i have known people named dusty barnes and sandi cox and always wondered why their parents did that. plus, i think with a less traditional fn like memphis, a more traditional middle name would sound best. she might not want to go by memphis and needs another alternative from which to choose.

  • Not a good combo. Plus, I don't see what is appealing about the name Rain, nobody really enjoys the rain so why name your kid that.

Memphis is ok but definitely nms.

  • It immediately reminded me of a Tom Petty song, Louisiana Rain.  I wouldn't do it.
  • I could get used to Memphis as a first name. It's kinda cute actually. I wouldn't go with Rain as the mn though.

Which one of those words do you consider to be an adjective?

To the OP, I think Memphis Rain is a bit much. I'd go with one or the other, but not both.

  • Sounds like a fragrance designed by a Garth Brooks.  "Don't forget to buy the Memphis Rain gift set for Father's Day!"
