daycare in Ukrainian Village/Wicker Park/Bucktown

Hi,

I'm new to this local list...just found it, actually. I'm about 19 weeks pregnant and live in Ukrainian Village. Do people know of any resources for daycare options in this area? I'm on faculty at UIC and UIC does not yet have infant daycare options, unfortunately. My husband works at Northwestern and we're on the list for the center there (starting in November) but I'm not sure I'm comfortable with that particular option as of yet. I'd prefer in home daycare options or some sort of nanny share situation.

  • FYI...not a fan of the northwestern daycare.  esp the infant room. we pulled my son out of there after only a few months. unfortunately, i can't help you with daycares in your location.  we found our nanny on care.com

  • If you don't mind me asking - what was the problem with Northwestern's daycare? I haven't toured it yet but my husband seemed to think it looked okay.
  • i sent you a PM.  my reply is rather lengthy....
  • Thanks - got it.
  • Do you want a center or in-home?  Cost in mind?

There is CLP on Milwaukee, I recently saw that a new one opened at Augusta & Milwaukee, Chicago Home Daycare south of Augusta by Damen, Buffington Academy north of Armitage by Milwaukee.  You can find more on NPNparents.org too (need to pay a fee to view discussion boards though).

But you may have a hard time finding a center that has availability for an infant- many have long waiting lists.  In-homes tend not to know whether they have availability far out.

  • I prefer in home as opposed to a center, but we can't afford a nanny.

Is that NPNparents.org something I should join/helpful? The fee is pretty high, so just curious.

  • Quite a few of the places I listed are smaller "centers"- so your child isn't one of dozens.  Not as small as in-home daycares where there might be only 5 kids- but definitely not huge.

I found NPN was very helpful- the fee is for 1 year too.  But a lot of the programs they have and groups were relevant for my family.  We found our nanny on their, nanny-share family and daycare center (we switched when DS was 1 year).

You can also try Illinois Action for Children- they have a free or fee-based service (if you are above a certain income) to get a list of childcare centers and in-home daycares that are licensed.  I had to pay about the same as the NPN fee (but this was back in 2008)- but I found that the list wasn't very helpful for me- I much preferred personal recommendations.

Nanny-sharing may also be an option if you want to do something cheaper than a nanny.  There are still downfalls- but it is another option that is fairly common in the city.

  • If you'd like to chat with me- I'm a nanny currently, but am expecting my first child. i'd like to bring my child to work, so would offer rates similar to that of a nanny share...I'd basically split the cost. Let me know what you think, or if you'd like to chat further, PM me! :)

I'm almost 17 weeks, so our due dates aren't far from each other. i have twin experience, so this would be similar to twins, in my opinion!
