Babies: 0 - 3 Months

really bad baby acne

Is there anything I can do for it?  I've started wiping his face with a baby wipe a cpl of times a day but my mom said just a wet washcloth is better? Can the wipe irritate his skin, if its not irritating his bottom? Is acne caused by the breastmilk and spit up touching his skin, or are we giving him too many kisses on his cheeks? :)

Also a silly question but.... is there any link to baby acne and teen acne? Will he have it this bad in his teen years? Poor kid. ; )

Re: really bad baby acne

  • I think baby acne is because of all your hormones.

My DS had for about a week.  Use a cloth with warm water.  I was told anything else will just irritate it and it's better to let it run its course.

  • If it's on his chin it's probably milk pimples - you can prevent these by wiping baby's mouth with a damp washcloth after each feeding.

If they are all over his face, could it be milia (whiteheads)?  If so, they usually go away by the 4th month.

  • About 2 weeks ago my baby got really bad acne. I felt so bad, and i noticed that the baby lotion was making it worse, even the aveeno baby kind. I read that washing his face with water 3 times a day helps, so I tried it. It helped but he still had it. My mom had to take the baby this past week due to my gall bladder having to be removed (which was really hard and I was not ready to be away from him). His poor face was so dry that she used St. Ives lotion on his face and let me tell you his fade is really cleared up. He still has bumps and if we don't put the lotion on his face gets red. We still wash his face 3 times a day, and between that and the lotion it really helps. Good Luck!

It's hormonal - very common around 4 or 5 weeks. My poor baby's face was a mess at 4 wks! It will clear up but in the meantime a wet washcloth does help.

Exactly.  Our pedi said that everything we do to try and speed up the process just makes us feel better, but baby acne won't clear up until it's ready.  He needs to flush out your hormones.  DS is just now clearing up, and he had his breakout at 3.5 weeks.  It got terrrrrrible before it got better.  We had to cancel his newborn photo shoot b/c of it!

Um, I don't think you should be washing a newborn's face 3 times per day. No wonder it is so dry!

  • My pedi said just leave it alone.  There is nothing that can help it.  I wouldn't use a baby wipe on any part but the bottom.  It does have chemicals in it even if you use the sensitive wipes.

Rubbing a little breast milk on the really bad acne parts has helped a lot.  It cleared it up in a day.

  • My LO had it so bad her face looked swollen...our pedi recommended hydrocortisone cream (the kind you buy over the counter) applied morning and night.  It reduced the redness after 24 hrs and was mostly gone within a week.  HTH

THIS!  Leave it alone--it's from your hormones still running through the baby's body after delivery.  No wipes--just a warm washcloth or water on cottonballs.  And you can definitely try some breastmilk--express some on a cottonball and wipe it on gently.

  • My pedi used eucerin calming cream with her children so she suggested it to us.  I put a little on each spot and the acne was gone the next day.
