Toddlers: 24 Months+

When do you switch from Infant Tylenol & Motrin?

I was at the Dr's this morning, but forgot to ask this question.  I tried to go on and e-mail them, but their site is down.  If it's not up in a few hours I will try and call from work.

  • I'm pretty sure at 2. We just did.

  • We switched at 18 months per his pedi. I had taken him in for a sick visit and I was worried to death about him because I'd given him Motrin and his fever was still 102. She laughed for a good while when I told her I was still giving him infant Motrin. She said "have you noticed the size of this child?" Oh yeah...

This, pretty much word for word.  Check the weight limits on the infant version.  If DC is beyond the weight limit, move on up to the children's version.

  • We went a long time without needing it, but right around 2 she had a fever and I got childrens.
  • Around 20 months or so. We were out to the ER because of a high fever, etc and the ER Dr. giggled at me when I told him I was giving her the infant tylenol and motrin...he told me to start using children's.

  • I can't remember exactly.  It was probably right around 2 but I paid more attention to the weight than I did to her age.

  • I'm pretty sure - they are the same thing. Its just one if more concentrated than the other. I have been giving DS the childrens version for a while now and just changed the amount.
  • Interesting. We haven't had to give her Tylenol since she was younger and teething, but I probably wouldn't have thought twice about giving her infants' at this age -- although she was still just under 24 lbs. at 2 years.

  • When I 1st read this, I thought you were asking WHEN a child can have Motrin... A child can have Motrin for the first time at 6 months of age; their kidneys are mature enough to process the Motrin at that age.

Then I re-read it... I still use Infant's b/c it requires DD to swallow less liquid medicine for the same concentration. GL!

  • I asked the pharmacist a while back, and was told to go by the weight, and not the age.  We just started children's Tylenol because DD just hit 24lbs.
