hiccups and reflux?

Do you know if there's a connection between a baby having the hiccups frequently while in their mommy's tummy and having reflux when they're born?

Did those of you with a hiccupy little find that he/she had reflux too?  This kiddo has the hiccups all of the time and I honestly don't remember Amelia have them at all.  She was never a spitter, so I'm wondering if I should prepare myself. Stick out tongue

Re: hiccups and reflux?

  • #1 had hiccups at least 5-6 times during the day and was not a spitter.

#2 had hiccups at least 5-6 times during the day and is a spitter but does not have reflux (I was just overfeeding her).

So I don't think it's a link!  But it's a good sign that the lungs are maturing!

  • I agree with Lisa, I don't think there's a link.  Kaitlyn rarely had the hiccups and had reflux... Samantha was the same and doesn't have reflux. (She has hiccups all the time now though!)

  • I just want to know what it is like for them to have the hiccups! Stick out tongue LOL! I haven't had that experience yet (that I know of!!)
  • C had hiccups quite often and does not have any reflux issues.  In fact, he only spits up if he's pigged out and overeats - then when I sit him up to burp half of his last meal comes right back up.
  • Dylan hiccuped a lot towards the end.  He had silent reflux, where he doesn't actually spit up.  He's spit up but swallow it.  Gross!  Anyway, it was fixed by switching to hypoallergenic formula.  Expensive but totally worth it.

I wonder if there is a correlation...  I thought all babies hiccuped in utero and that hiccups after birth were totally normal too.

After 2 years and 6 IUIs, we did it with IVF w/ ICSI!

It's like rhythmic really small "kicks".  I guess that's the best way to describe it.  You'll know!  I didn't feel them until close to the end.

  • I felt like Abbie never stopped hiccuping while I was pregnant.  She did have reflux and was on meds for it for a while, but outgrew it.  She's 5 1/2 now and she still hiccups all the time though.  I'd say at least a few times a week.  Everytime she does I'm reminded of feeling it all the time.  She's just a hiccupy kid I guess!

thats really the only way to describe it... and you'll definitely know if it happens.

and to the OP, I've wondered the same thing if there was a correlation but figured if there was, i'd have read it in some book by now.

  • With K she had the hiccups all the freaking time. She did not have reflux. C I don't think he had the hiccups at all while I was pregnant and once again no reflux.

Maybe you are having a boy. Wink
