Throwing up rice cereal?

We've been slowly (and I do mean slowly) introducing rice cereal to DD. At first, she just spit it out.  However, now that she is actually swallowing a few small spoonfuls, it doesn't stay down very long.  Within 30 mins... it comes back up on her, and chunky vom seems to be everywhere.  She does have reflux, but I thought cereal would help the problem.

Should we back off for a while? Or call the pedi?

Aww tbird, so nice to see you.  Yes, from BOTB - I do not plan to return to the drama.  I never said I would be gone from my other boards.

    Moving on....

  • Lurking..and even though my LO is younger than yours, we went through something similar when we started rice as well. We do not feed LO rice through a spoon, but added it through his bottle and initially he did throw it up. It was a lot of trial and error to find the right balance of formula to rice that worked for him, but once we found the right mix it helped tremendously with his reflux and it's the only way he can eat without throwing his whole bottle up.

I would call the pedi's office and see what they say.

  • I would back off the rice cereal. My son has MSPI, and reflux. Our GI said that sometimes sensitive babies do not do well at all on cereal, and do just fine on purees.
  • I would adjust the ratio of cereal to milk (more milk), and tell the pedi, in case it's allergy-related.
