High-Risk Pregnancy

Anybody had this happen? re: GD (long)

I passed my 1-hour GD test at 28 weeks with no problems - not even close to the cut off number.  Well, our baby has been measuring large starting at about the 32 week mark (measuring fundal height with the measuring tape).  They ordered a growth u/s and it was fairly reasonable - he weighed about 5.5 pounds, but as a 33 weeker he had the size of a 38 week head (yeah for brains!).  I continued to measure large, so I had another growth u/s at 37 weeks; his weight then was 9.5 pounds.  Yesterday I met with my doctor regarding that ultrasound, we chatted about it (yes he constantly acknowledges that growth u/s can be off) and I'm not sure what led him to the idea, but he decided to test me for GD again with the 1 hour.  I failed.  They then scheduled me to take the 3 hour on Monday, but then he called me later in the afternoon and said that they weren't going to waste my time on that, that they were going to proceed as though I am GD positive.

I'm 38 weeks on Monday.  I'll get a glucose meter, strips, lancets, meet with a diabetes counselor as well as a dietician.  Tuesday I'll meet back with my doctor to go over all of those things.  From what I understand is that we're going to try to largely control it by diet, but with the amount of time between catching the problem and the impending due date/c-section date (it has yet to be set, but I know with GD they don't like to go past 39 weeks) there's a good chance that I'm also treated with insulin and/or medication, to try to get it controlled asap.

I'm a little scared, mostly for the baby's sake; I know that I'll be fine.  I guess my question is is with the GD only being caught/diagnosed/treated at 38 weeks, is one week of treatment long enough to get things corrected so that our son is alright when he's born?  What (if any) will be the long term effects of the GD be on him?

Thanks for anything you have to offer!

  • Sorry, I can't really comment on the late diagnosis.  I had GD and I was well controlled with diet and insulin at night.  I'm not sure if there is anything to correct this late in the game.  I can comment on measuring too big.Kalvin was measuring 3 weeks ahead since the 30 week mark.  He was born 6 days early at 10lb and 22 inches. The can estimate weight but not length.  He doesn't have fat on his shoulders nor is he chubby.  We expected a very chunky monkey and he's not, he's proportional.  Everyone that sees him expects to see a chubby baby and he's not.  His sugars are fine and there are no ill effects on him nor I.  Hang in there and good luck.

  • Your baby will likely be larger at birth and possibly at higher risk for type 2 diabetes later in life. As for if you can have your sugars well controlled for the last couple of weeks it may hekp your LO not have too low of blood sugar at birth. If your blood sugars are too high their pancreas works hard to clear the sugar by pumping up insulin production and they may be born with low blood sugar due to that.

  • Great, thank you ladies.  I am really hoping that my diet will be well controlled for the last couple weeks and that he'll come out just fine.  I also hope he'll be not too much of a "chunky monkey" but just a big little guy.
  • In my first pregnancy, I wasn't diagnosed with GD, but we think it may have developed after they performed the tests.  DS was 9lbs 15oz at birth, but completely healthy.  And like one of the PP's, he wasn't fat.  He even looked a little scrawny!  He has always been big, though - off the charts in height and on the high end for weight (again, still thin, just  big, solid boy!).

The sono tech told me the other day to expect another big baby, this time between 8.5 - 9 lbs.

Good luck to you!  I hope everything works out well!

That is comforting to hear, thank you!  I hope everything goes well for you for the remainder of your pregnancy Smile
