Hilton Head vs Outer Banks?

My family is planning a trip at the end of the summer to one of these two places. There will be 6 kids under 6.

Re: Hilton Head vs Outer Banks?

  • I haven't been to either, but when I asked around, I was told that Hilton Head is the better choice. I've heard that it is more family friendly, but again, I am not speaking from personal experience. Based on reviews from friends and family, we are heading to Hilton Head in July.

  • HH is more resort like.  Lots of activities, shops, restaurants, ect.  Outer banks is more nature based, outdoor activities, both are great.  I would probably go with HH though for that many little ones.
  • Hilton Head has significantly more to do and more options.  Outer Banks is more rural - more like you'd go to the grocery and get food for the week, as opposed to eating out, for example.  When we went to Hilton Head, we ate out a lot more and did more activities.

I think with really young kids, OBX is nice because it's really relaxed and easy to just go to the beach for a bit and then head back to the house/condo for naps.

However, with that said, I think I prefer Hilton Head - it would appeal to people for different reasons, which I think is better in a large group.

  • I've never been to Outer Banks, but I lived in Hilton Head and did my internship there. We go there every year and love it.
  • Love love love the Outer Banks.  Went every summer from like 8-25 (when my parents moved to FL).  Parts are more "resort-like" like closer to Kitty Hawk and more "rural" closer to Avon.  That said, I still think I would pick Hilton Head.  The waves at the Outer Banks can be really really rough.  My parents would worry about my brother and I out in them even as we got older - teenagers and such.  It totally depends on the weather and surf and everything.  It can be pretty calm, but it is pretty rough a lot.  We're waiting for the kids to get older before we go there, anyway.
  • We were just trying to figure out the same thing and we chose Hilton Head.  We found a great 3BR 2BA condo right near the beach through VRBO.com.  We are headed to Hilton Head in late June.  We decided to stay near North/South Forest Beach as they have new public bathrooms there and our condo we are staying at offers private bathrooms/cabanas on the beach if you stay there.
