Ok so as thier birthday get closer i am starting to have many questions about the c section. I had a vag birth with DD. I plan to ask these questions to peri tomorrow but i am wondering what other peoples experiences. I realize that everyone doctor's are different but please share.
Did you scheudle your C-section ahead of time?
Did your Peri (if you had one perform your C-sect.?
I was told last week that the peri doc only operate 2 days a week. So it it likely my reg OB practice docs will deliver. This freaks DH out! He wants one of the Peri docs b/c they have more experience
How long after did you get to see your babies?
How long until you could drive again?
Did you get a bikini cut even with multiples? (I saw a birth show where they cut the triplet mom vertically)
Thanks ladies!
Re: Many C- section questions (a little long)
1) for my son, no. I didn't want him to come until he was ready. He was breech and I was going to need a c-section but I refused to schedule one. He came 39 weeks 4 days. Doctor estimates can be wrong in terms of how developed they are and I didnt' want him to come before he was ready. We don't know what triggers labor and I didn't want to screw with that. For my twin girls, it was an emergency c-section at 30 weeks and I didn't have a choice.
2) A peri may not have more c-section experience. Just more high risk pregnancy experience. My peri was actually on vacation (again, I was 10 weeks early) so an associate did it. She did a fine job. All OBs are trained to do c-sections.
3) For my son (he was breech, so I needed a c-section) I saw him immediately and then had to recover from the spinal: about an hour. Then I saw him again. For my girls, I saw them immediately and then they went to the NICU. I recovered from the spinal (again, an hour) and then I went to the NICU. My son I could breastfeed immediately. My girls I could not because they were premature.
4) Two weeks. Both times.
5) Bikini cut for both. Actually for my second, they just went over the old scar.
Our Peri performed the c-section. They never scheduled it though. His thing was "we'll see how far we can get". I ended up gaining 31 pounds of fluid that last week and had protein in my urine so we delivered the next day at 35 weeks and 6 days. I got to see two of the babies for about 20mins after I got out of recovery but they were upstairs in the Continuing care nursery for observation (and Caitlin needed a little O2 due to fluid in her lungs) and I was downstairs in high risk. They moved me upstairs the next day and then I got to really see and spend time with my little ones.
Technically they say 2 weeks before you can drive but because Caitlin had to stay a few extra days due to a reflux issue I was driving back and forth from the hospital after I was discharged which was 5 days after delivery.
I think they try to always do the bikini cut. Due to so much edema in my lower abdomen they had to do a large vertical cut on me. It starts about two inches about my belly button and goes to about 4-5 inches from my bikini line. Very unusual though and because of the edema and pain from the edema I was very grateful he chose to go vertical. I do not think it would have healed right at all if he tried the other way...it was really really bad.
Hope this helps

1. Kind of. We had one scheduled, but ended up doing it 2.5 weeks before my scheduled date due to complications.
2. Had I gone to my scheduled date, my OB (my MFM doesn't do them at my hospital) would have done it. Since it was done semi-emergent and early, it was done by the OB on call from my clinic. Around here, MFM's don't typically do c-sections unless it is high order multiples. Whereas, my OB averages 5-7 c/s per week between scheduled and ones needed when he is on call.
3. The girls were taken straight to the NICU. One due to weight, the other due to her not starting breathing right away. DH was able to follow them to the NICU when they were taken. I spent 2 hours in recovery, then was wheeled into the NICU to see them before I was taken to my room. I was only able to hold Twin A that night, Twin B was having her central line put in.
4. I was cleared to drive 10 days post op, so long as I wasn't taking percocet anymore.
5. I had a bikini cut. Twin A was breech and Twin B was transverse under my ribs.
Did your Peri (if you had one perform your C-sect.?
I was told last week that the peri doc only operate 2 days a week. So it it likely my reg OB practice docs will deliver. This freaks DH out! He wants one of the Peri docs b/c they have more experience
My section was Emergency with Emerson. My OB did it. Your peri won't have a thing to do with the babies after he delivers them and cuts the cord. There will be special new born dr's there to take care of the babies.
How long after did you get to see your babies?
I was in recovery because I dilated to almost a nine an then, had a section so, I wasn't in good condition. I believe it was about 2 hours in recovery. However, I got to see her and kiss her in the delivery room. My H went with Emerson and was with her the entire time.
How long until you could drive again? It was awhile. I want to say she told me a month but, I started driving again after two weeks. I may be remembering this wrong.
Did you get a bikini cut even with multiples? (I saw a birth show where they cut the triplet mom vertically) My OB said she'd use the same incision as the first.
1.) Yes, we did. We planned to do an amnio at 36w1d and schedule the c/s at 36w2d if their lungs were mature.
2.) Yes, my Peri performed the c/s. We chose February 2nd because that was a day he was at the hospital.
3.) I saw them when they came out (briefly) and then after they had some testing done (probably 5 minutes later). But I got to hold them and nurse them after about 30 minutes once I was closed up.
4.) I drove 5 days later. I was never placed on restriction.
5.) Yes, bikini cut.
After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!
We did schedule it ahead of time, but only a month ahead of time. It was scheduled for 38 weeks 2 days because my dr. does not allow going past 38 weeks and he only operates on Saturdays (scheduled anyway - obviously if I went before he would have operated)
my OB did it - I saw a group of peris at the hospital, but from what I understand from that group is that your OB generally has more experience with the actual section than the peri - the peri is more to manage the pregnancy. That is how it was at our practice anyway.
I saw my babies immediately after they came out - they stayed in the OR for about 20 minutes with DH then they were taken to the nursery for 4 hours - this was hospital policy. I was in recover having issues with BP and urine so it was for the best since they were running all sorts of tests on me. I asked for them at 4 hours on the dot and they brought them into recovery with me for a bit then we moved to the room and they were with me again.
Driving - 2 weeks. Actually I was cleared to do everything after 2 weeks, sex, exercise (no ab work, nothing strenuous from the get go - build up by starting to walk)
bikini cut
Did you scheudle your C-section ahead of time? Yes, my hospital allows you to schedule 2 months ahead - so at my appt in April I scheduled my c/s for 38w in June.... and I made it to my scheduled c/s!
Did your Peri (if you had one perform your C-sect.? No, my OB did. My peri does not deliver.
I was told last week that the peri doc only operate 2 days a week. So it it likely my reg OB practice docs will deliver. This freaks DH out! He wants one of the Peri docs b/c they have more experience. Most peris in the country do not deliver anymore - OBs have TONS of experience with c/s's... I felt 100% confident in my OB. If I didn't I wouldn't have been going to his office to begin with.
How long after did you get to see your babies? about 40 minutes - there was no NICU time needed - so within the hour we were all together in my room.
How long until you could drive again? doc said to wait 2 weeks, but that was precautionary - if i was still on meds. I did wait- b/c i had DH home with me, there was no reason for me to drive.
Did you get a bikini cut even with multiples? (I saw a birth show where they cut the triplet mom vertically) yes- very low- you can't see it in a bikini- not that i'll ever wear one again that shows my belly- b/c the rest of it is so gross- twin skin sagging = ick.
Hi & congrats! I only had twins but this is what happened for me.
1) not scheduled. I was scheduled for induction to go natural after 26 hours of labor they had to do c-section.
2) OB did c=section
3) I got to see the babies as soon as they came out but got to hold them as soon as I got in recovery about 20 mins later.
4) 2 weeks
5)bikini cut
Did you scheudle your C-section ahead of time? No; we actually planned to induce, but 2 days before it happened, I needed a C due to sudden decreased movement.
Did your Peri (if you had one perform your C-sect.? I was told last week that the peri doc only operate 2 days a week. So it it likely my reg OB practice docs will deliver. This freaks DH out! He wants one of the Peri docs b/c they have more experienc. Yes
How long after did you get to see your babies? I got to kiss them & hold them 5 mins later (after they were checked & cleaned).
How long until you could drive again? About 2 weeks
Did you get a bikini cut even with multiples? (I saw a birth show where they cut the triplet mom vertically) Yes, what a relief!
Did you scheudle your C-section ahead of time?
Yes, but I ended up with an emergency C-section a week before my planned date
Did your Peri (if you had one perform your C-sect.?
I was told last week that the peri doc only operate 2 days a week. So it it likely my reg OB practice docs will deliver. This freaks DH out! He wants one of the Peri docs b/c they have more experience
No, my OB did it. I would actually argue that an OB has more surgical experience, since they deliver more often than peris.
How long after did you get to see your babies?
I got to give them a quick kiss, but they had to go to the Special Care nursery, and I had to be put on magnesium sulfate because of my pre-e, so it was over 24 hours before I was allowed out of my bed and into the nursery to see them.
How long until you could drive again?
I was allowed after 2 weeks, but I probably didn't actually drive again for at least 3-4 weeks.
Did you get a bikini cut even with multiples? (I saw a birth show where they cut the triplet mom vertically)
Yes.
1. No, I had an emergency c/s due to HELLP but luckily I was already in the hospital.
2. Yes mine did.
3. My girls had to go to an adjoining hospitals NICU and because of the magnesium drip that I had I couldn't go until the following day to see them.
4. It was 2 weeks until I could drive again.
5. I got a bikini cut. It is barely noticeable. I would have a c/s again in a heartbeat. I had a great surgical expierence.
Good Luck!
- we scheduled it the day before, so no.
- my peri performed my c/s, but he was my only doctor. had i stuck with my original OB (with a consulting peri) he would have delivered.
- 26 hours - i had to be on a mag drip for 24 hours because of pre-e.
- 2 weeks
- yes, bikini cut
