How soon did you start thickening LO's cereal?

Hi,

We just started cereal tonight and followed the guidelines of 1 Tbsp mixed with 4 Tbsp of breastmilk and it was pretty much soup.  DS did great with it. He seemed to like it, but it was pretty hard to feed him because it was so thin.

How long did you wait to thicken it up a bit?  Did you do it gradually? Or is it just the first one they want it to be that thin because it's the first time.

Thanks!

  • our pedi told us to make it about the consistency of applesauce.  she didn't say anything about thickening it over time, or making it thinner to start out with.

  • My pedi said to start soupy and around 8 months you can make it chunky like you normally would with oatmeal.  So I assume a gradual process up until 8 months.

  • Cullen won't eat it if it is soupy so we have had it pretty thick (like oatmeal) for about a month.   He eats it like a champ and we have had no problems with choking.  We did have some issues with constipation at first so follow up with Pedi if you have this issue.

FYI: before anyone flames that we have DS eating cereal via spoon at 2 months it was requested by our pedi since DS is a chunker (21 lbs currently) and eating more than 40 oz a day.

  • Pretty much immediately.  DS was eating like a champ!  My pedi said to make it a consistency of cream of wheat or applesauce, so we never had it super thin and soupy.
  • Same as PP. We made it thicker to start b/c i couldnt even spoon it into his mouth as per the directions. He ate it just fine :)
  • We just started this week but my pedi instructions were 1 Tbsp cereal to 1 oz milk. It makes it pretty thick. She said that if they were having a hard time then mix it to whatever consistency they would tolerate. Today was the 4 day of "real" food and they both took all of it. I would just play around and see what consistency he likes.

  • We started the really soupy cereal at 3.5 months.  1tbsp to 2oz of BM.  After a week we moved her up to 2tbsp to 2oz of BM.  When we took her to the pedi for her 4 month check up, she said to go up to 4tbsp to 2oz of BM.  I thought this was a huge jump but trusted the pedi.  I learned DD was not ready for such a big jump when she started getting constipated.  We went back and started over again.  I started making it thicker with pear juice instead of the BM.  That helped.  Right now we are doing about 3.5tbsp to 2.5oz of BM (or pear juice).  So, to answer your question.... we are gradually moving up according to what works best for DD.
