Babies: 9 - 12 Months

BFing mamas

Do you still BF LO in the middle of the night?

DS sleeps 7ish pm to 7 or 8 am, but still wakes up hungry between 4-5am (sometimes around 1 also).  I nurse him for a few minutes and he goes back to sleep.  He does wake up throughout the night and pop his paci back in his mouth without a fuss, so I feel like the time that he actually cries even when he's sucking on his paci he is legitimately hungry.

I've convinced myself that it's not so bad, and I just go back to sleep easily afterward.  My only issue with it is I don't know when I'll ever know if it's not hunger and has become a control pattern that he needs to go back to sleep.  Any advice?

ETA: We stopped cosleeping and moved LO to his own room at 6.5 months.  Before that time he nursed several times each night.

  • We cosleep and DS nurses throughout the night.  I don't think my supply would hold up if he stopped nursing at night.  He's so distracted during the day that the night sessions are the only good ones.

  • We have the same problem. he gets up 1-3 times per night, and I nurse him back to sleep. I know sometime i will have to cut the night feedings out, but i haven't been able to make myself do it yet. i do make him go 6 hours from his before bedtime feeding, but that's my only rule with him. his pedi keeps telling me he can do 10 hours, but he has never done that before.

    this exactly!!

  • DD still wakes up around 3 and 5 to nurse. I think it is a routine more now than anything but at 3 am it is hard!! So, I am there with you!
  • Ds was sttn for the last few weeks but this past week he has been eating twice at night. I just let him do what he needs. Hes teething so nursing more and too distracted to eat enough during the day. I try to make sure we get good feeds during the day but sometimes he just isnt at commited to eating as he is a night. It is tiring but Im just trying to go with the flow at the moment.

  • Yes, I nurse throughout the night.
  • we are in the exact same boat- but he is really eating at his 3-4 am wakeup.  I am just going with it-  this one wakeup thing is soo much better than it used to be, and I am getting rested.  I did however tell my H it is like clockwork and I don't know if he is ever going to break the pattern b/c he is sooo used to eating.

I am giving him until 1 to drop it-  then I will night wean

  • DD sleeps from 8pm to 8am. She used to get up in the middle of the night to nurse. She eventually stopped waking up to nurse. I would leave her if she woke up and let her fuss a little until she fell back asleep. If she started to really cry then I'd go in.

  • Around 8 mons my LO was still getting up several times to nurse and we had already established pretty good solid food eatting so I knew it was habit not hunger. I had my husband go to him when he woke so he would stop associating waking with feeding. We eventually then went to letting him cry. It took until 10 months until he was sleeping through the night. We are all much happier and now he eats better during the day.
  • i no longer nurse DS at night.  i stopped about 3-4 weeks ago.  he was taking a nursing session around 3:30-4am every night...i was convinced he was hungry.  one night, just to see, i soothed him and shushed him instead and he went back to sleep...i think it was easier for me and him just to nurse him back to sleep but i guess he didn't need the nursing anymore afterall!  he actually STTN (like really, truly never made a peep from 7pm-7:30am) for the first time ever the other night!

  • It seems I'm in the minority here. DD slept through the night at 6 weeks and has ever since. She nurses before bed (730pm) and when she wakes up (630 am). She cries for her paci sometimes, but other times she could care less that its out.

The past 3 nights I have not fed at all after DS goes to sleep and it's worked out. The 1st night he woke twice but I was able to give him his paci and he went back to sleep, it took some time though.

  • IMO, if he is only BFing for a few minutes, he's not really hungry.  If he was eating like normal, I'd say he's hungry for sure.  Maybe try rocking him a few minutes or something else instead.

DD STTN 11 to 12 hours but now and then she will wake in the middle of the night crying.  Depending on how she's crying (whining vs. full on crying), I'll either leave her be and she goes back to sleep or I'll go in there and pick her up.  I haven't BF'd her in the middle of the night for months.  Even when I pick her up in the middle of the night, I sit in the glider for 5 to 10 minutes with her and put her back in bed awake and she goes back to sleep on her own.
