Placenta Previa Successes? (not for me!)

My sister is 20 weeks pregnant and just went for the u/s the other day. (It's a girl!). The tech said that she had a partial placenta previa and will have to get another u/s at 28 weeks to see if it moves. She sees her dr this week to discuss it more, but has been Googling and getting a bit freaked out about it.

If you (or someone you know) had placenta previa on one u/s and it moved so that you didn't have to have a c/s, can you post here? (I think she's seen enough info on when it doesn't move - for the moment anyway.)

Thanks!

Re: Placenta Previa Successes? (not for me!)

  • I don't have much info- But maybe a ray of hope!  A friend of mine had PP and had the c-section scare.  It did end up moving enough to be safe.  It took longer than 28 wks I think though.  So it can move!

  • I had placenta previa at 20 weeks and was monitored at 24 weeks, and got the all-clear at 30 weeks. It's fairly common and most resolve as the uterus gets bigger to accomodate the LO. I did not need a c/s - good luck to your sister!

  • my friend had it with her 3rd son and it cleared up long before her delivery.  she had a natural birth.

  • Hey jen -

I had partial previa with Sydney..diagnosed at 16wks by 30 wks it had moved - never had any bleeding or issues at all. With this PG I had an extremem low-lying placenta (not much different then previa except that the placenta was not sitting on top of the cervix but was only 2 cm off of it. I had bleeding at 24 weeks, got put on pelvic rest then. At 30weeks I got put on strict bedrest, then at 35 weeks it actually moved up enough to make my dr's happy.

WIth a partial previa you may still be able to have a vaginal birth - it depends on how much of the cervix is being covered - the risks are placenta abruption and hemorraging. If it is a complete previa I think c-section is the only method. It's all a wait and see game. Feel free to email me if you have other questions!!!!

Side note...how is T liking school? Since i haven't been able to take Syd I haven't seen him in awhile...hope he is adjusting good!!!!

  • I had a partial previa, which was found when I had some spotting (but it was dark, so more likely from something else whose name I cannot recall at the moment).  It moved within a few weeks IIRC.  They put me on bedrest for a week.  It's pretty common.  The internet can be a dangerous thing for a pregnant woman!
  • I had it at 20 wks and it had moved up by the follow-up at 28.  I think it's fairly common.

  • I had it early - I think before my 20 week u/s.  Still had it at 20 weeks and it was gone by 28 weeks.
  • I have it. I am 18w and was diagnosed at 16w. The doctors say it corrects itself 85-90% of the time. I go back for the next ultrasound on 4/1 so I am very hopeful that they will be able to see some movement. I made the mistake of googling it too. Very scary!

I am sure your sister will be fine as it does correct itself most of the time.  Seeing that other people had it too and it did resolve itself has made me feel better.
