2nd Trimester

15lbs! Are you serious??

That is ALL my doctor gave me permission to lift... I was hoping for 25.. But because of my "hip" issue (which is NOT even an issue, it just tends to pop out of place.. Go to the chiro, I'm fine!) she feels that I should not lift over 15lbs... I'm MOVING. It's already hard enough that we have to move only on Mondays and Wednesdays, but now I can't even lift my dog.

How much are you "allowed" to lift????

Re: 15lbs! Are you serious??

  • My Dr. doesn't want me lifting much at all. i believe he said keep it light, around 5lbs no more. But some grocery bags weigh more than 5lbs. Hopefully my next appt will show my placenta has moved upward (currently it's low) and i'll get permission to do a little more!

This exactly. It's a PITA - especially when doing laundry. It must be so hard trying to move to a new place with those restrictions!

  • I don't have restrictions - just the do what you feel comfortable doing.  I also have no issues either.

It def. could be worse for me! Thank goodness I can lift a little more.

How does anyone get by with this kind of restriction?! Hello- a gallon of milk weighs 6.8 lbs... dont ask how I know that... I was a dairy foods FFA nerd in high school lol. Anyway, I mean, you are going to be lifting an infant that hopefully weighs around 7lbs when he or she is born... wouldnt want to pull a muscle because your arms are so used to feather weights lol. How ridiculous! lol okay, I get it... dont go bucking 40-70 lb bales of hay all day, but 5lbs? lol I think my duffel bag of a purse weighs close to that lol

  • I know it's ridiculous!!! Definitely not a way to live, that's why it's temporary. They say it's very common for the placenta to be low and then rise by 16 weeks so that's what i'm hoping for. In the mean time i've been put on restrictions from heavy lifting, strenuous exercise (including shoveling) and sex or any other form of penatration.

Good to know about the gallon of milk, didn't know it weighed that much. Thankfully i buy the half gallons so i think i'm all set.

  • Wow, I've been moving furniture all week and carrying paint cans up and down the stairs!

  • My doctor told me it doesn't matter until the third trimester when my back has more strain on it from the belly.  She said there is no danger to the fetus, it's just your back that you need to be careful of, so lift with your legs.
  • I really wish my doctor had told me to do what was comfortable, or whatever. Unfort. my SO was at the doctor with me, and I get paraded by the pregnancy police if he notices stuff moved.

It's just hard because I'm moving! It's hard to move, when 90% of what you own you aren't allowed to move.

  • Right now I can only lift 5 lb :( My cat weighs more than that. I am hoping once it is confirmed that my complete placenta previa is gone, I will have no restrictions. It will be a long wait until the first week in April though.

  • My midwife told me 30-35 lbs at my first appointment, unless there was a medical issue that was identified later on.
  • BAHAHA! I just realized you got out of your lease early!

I'm sorry. That makes moving hard. On the brightside, your back won't be killing you in the morning.

  • My son is 30 pounds & I lift him. I don't understand why only 15 pounds???
  • My doctor restricted me to 25 pounds, but I moved my clinic to a new office these past weeks and clearly did not obey that rule. I moved a lot of things I shouldn't...heavy things...and spent hours on end moving boxes from one side of my office to the next. I didn't really have anyone to help. I wouldn't recommend it and highly recommend following doctor's orders, but on the bright side...I've been just fine. But I did worry I overdid it on more than a couple occasions. My back hurt and I was exhausted. From my understanding, the general restriction is more for the safety of the mother than the safety of the fetus, our center of gravity is changing and because of the loose ligaments.

  • I have no restrictions. Basically she said to listen to my body. I still carry DD at 39 lbs (less often than I used to). My product bag for work is probably 30-40 lbs that I have to lift in and out of my trunk, and my other bag I use often for work is probably 25 lbs. At least both are rolling bags.

That's really odd! I had complete placenta previa and wasn't put on any restrictions regarding lifting. I was just told no sex until it moved up. They diagnosed me with placenta previa at 8 weeks after I had some spotting. By my 16 week ultrasound it had moved up and the restriction was lifted.

She said in her OP that her hip keeps popping out.

I think I was told 20 or 25 lbs. I was a bad girl and got a huge bag of dog food the other day.. oops! But that's like the only time I have gone over my limit probably. I generally try to stick with what the doctor says.

  • I have a question about your hip! Mine does that I think. Sometimes after being in the car or standing up from a seated position all of a sudden I can't put pressure on one leg. It usually works itself out in a few minutes but it hurts if you attempt to walk on it. Is that what you have? What did your Dr. say? Did that happen before pregnancy? I've had it for years. I'm wondering if I should see someone...
  • My midwife suggested no more than 20lbs.  When I told her that I worked part time at a kids gymnastics center, she made that weigh suggestion, which eliminated me from nearly all work I would do as far as moving equiptment and spotting on apparatus.
