Postpartum Depression

PPA, Zoloft & BF

Anyone on Zoloft and breastfeeding?

I've struggled with anxiety for years, and it's been much worse lately; I can't take the breakthrough drug I used to take because it's incompatible with BF. My PCP prescribed Zoloft; my psychologist said to hold onto it unless I feel I really need it. My mom's been diagnosed with cancer and the anxiety just keeps getting worse, so I do feel like I need it. I am very worried about DD getting the milk and am wondering if I should take it or just try to do my cognitive techniques. Thoughts? Advice?

  • I'm so sorry about your Mom.

I think no one but you can decide if you should take it or not, but feel confident in knowing many women take Zoloft and breastfeed. It is known to be the best option for breastfeeding mothers. I took it for a short while breastfeeding and switched to Lexapro. We have had no side effects from either one. You have to take care of yourself so you can take care of your baby.

  • i took it while breastfeeding.  it sounds like you need it, so i'd take it.
  • I'm sorry to hear about your mother. I am on Zoloft and currently breastfeeding. We haven't seen any issues with DD since starting it.

  • I'm currently on Zoloft 25mg, and my OB says its okay to use while breastfeeding.  The only side effect I seem to have from using it, is drowsiness.   I don't think it's helped with my anxiety any, tbh.
  • I took it while BF, and I still take it.  I also have severe PPA and had bad anxiety before getting pg. I needed to take the zoloft for the PPA to even be able to use my coping skills. SOmetimes you just need that little boost to get you back on your feet. No one can tell you what is right for you to do, but IMO, you should do both.

  • Thanks for all your advice, ladies. I saw my OB for a separate issue yesterday and brought up the Zoloft. She said it is the drug of choice for nursing mothers and PPD, so I started taking it. You all helped reassure me about this.
