I enrolled in a flex spending plan this year, for the first time. I have pretty much no idea how it works, aside from knowing money comes out of my paycheck for a health savings plan (which I assume to be the same thing?) Anyway, I just got a check in the mail from my insurance company and I have no clue why or what I'm supposed to do with it. Naturally, it's Friday and I won't be able to call until Monday. Does anyone else have a flex spending account and do you get checks? Should I cash it or wait and call?

Re: WTH is this? Re: Flex spending account.
The way mine works is in the beginning of the year there is say $3000 put into my FSA account. I can submit a claim for any doctor bills, fsa approved items (tylenol, precriptions, co-pays, ect) and then my FSA account will send me a check. I always pay the bills first and my FSA reimburses me. Or I guess I could wait to pay the bill until I get the check but whatever. We used to have an FSA debit card that I could only use for those above mentioned items. But they got rid of that when my insurance and benefits changed.
ETA:If you got a check from your insurance company, that shouldn't have to do with your FSA account. I'd wait to call and find out what it is. Sorry I am no help!
Yep, this. You'll get a large bill from somewhere, soon I'm sure. Your insurance company should be able to tell you what it is for.
it has nothing to do with your FSA. You have to submit payment confirmation and the bill before being reimbursed by your FSA.
I did for my first account. It was automatically set up so I would use a credit card and be re-imbursed via check. It was actually annoying to always be getting 10 copay checks in the mail.
The account I have now is set up on a debit card, so I just use the debit card and it gets withdrawn. I don't receive any checks.
