My sister's good friend's DS (Lucas) is in the hospital tonight after having his left index finger amputated. Poor little guy, he needs lots of hugs and kisses right now.
Last month Lucas was at his aunt's house and was sticking his finger in her parrot's cage. The parrot bit the tip of his finger down to the tendon. It ended up getting infected and he was started on an antibiotic. His finger was put in a splint, and since he's just a baby they put a cast on it too. He was in the cast for 4 weeks and got it off today. The antibiotic didn't work and the infection spread and ate his entire finger down to the bone. When they took the cast off, his finger was black and they could see the bone. Needless to say, they immediately amputated it. His mom was able to sing to him while he was being put under. ![]()
His mom said he was a little more irritable than usual and was waking in the night crying but she didn't know what was wrong. She feels absolutely terrible, but honestly, how was she to know? Shouldn't the doctor have looked at the finger after the antibiotic treatment? I mean, to just give an antibiotic and wait 4 weeks to look at his poor finger seems really unprofessional to me.
Re: 15 month old had his finger amputated :(
Let's try this again...
I knew a girl that this happened to also. Strange...
That doctor should have checked on him IMO! Didn't the dressings need changing or anything? Gross. That poor little sweetie. He must have been in so much pain!!! Hope he heals quickly!
That is awful and so sad. My first thought after reading this was - how could the mother not have known or been aware of what was happening?! But I guess you trust the doctor that the medicine is working and that everything will be fine. This story is a good reminder that doctors can make tragic mistakes and you shouldn't always put 100% trust in them.
My mother told me a story of a family that had a pet raccoon that bit off a few of their baby's fingers when it climbed into his crib. I always thought how horrible it must have been for that baby to grow up and have to explain to people that he was missing fingers because his parents had a wild animal as a pet and allowed it to hurt him.
