Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Mom's that use the Baby Crack Machine or the Seahorse?

I'm considering the possiblity of getting a seahorse but I was curious if any of you mom's think that your child will become dependent on either of these to fall asleep?

That is my concern and I don't know if it is a legitimate thought or not.

Re: Mom's that use the Baby Crack Machine or the Seahorse?

  • I use a bear that mimics the mother's heart beat and I don't care if she needs it she can use it forever if I can sleep LOL

  • I use both and don't really care if she does become dependent on them.  If it  means 7= hours of sleep at a time, she can sleep with a noise machine until she is 80.  My husband sleeps with one every night and he's 33.

What is the downfall to becoming dependent on it?

ETA: it doesn't change anything health wise so why would you be concerned about dependency on white noise to sleep?  Just curious.

  • DD is getting a Sea Horse for Easter, but in the meantime, the monitor plays a crashing waves sound and we turn it on every night when she goes to bed & after every feeding.

I sleep much much better with some sort of white noise or noise in general and I think she does too.  I can sleep without it, but I prefer it.

LO's are so use to the noise our bodies make all the time, so it's comforting to them, and anything to get sleep!

I'm never sure what "being dependent" means when it comes to babies. Babies outgrow a lot of things and they need help transitioning to new things, no matter what. They are all eventually weaned from breast milk or formula, transitioned from crib to bed, etc. Helping them move through stages is just part of parenting, I don't get what the big deal is really.

not being able to fall asleep on her own.

Like if we go somewhere I'd like her to be able to fall asleep in the car/in the moby etc.

I'm not sure if she would become dependent on it, it's just a concern of mine.

  • I agree with the others- if I get some sleep, I don't give a crap how long he needs it!

It's not that it is a "big deal" but it's a concern of mine as a mother, I think I'm entitled to that.

I know that babies out grow things but I'm wondering if it will be an issue for her down the road if she always has a seahorse to put her to sleep...my concern is will she learn to sleep on her own

In that case, we have used both of these since day 5.  My daughter still falls asleep in the car, on my chest, in people's arms, in her crib, ect.  Babies sleep. It's what they do. ;-)  With or without the white noise.  It has just become our night time routine for our baby to put it on.  It helps her associate bed time and going down for the night vs. nap time.

  • We use the seahorse and the mommy bear...and as PP have stated i really dont care if he carries that thing to college with him but i need my rest...
  • my daughter has a monitor that plays all kinds of different things. it has a heart beat that sounds like the womb, also has waves crashing, birds cherping, and sings to her also. she loves it

so you don't use it for naps? I guess I figured people used it for all of the sleep times. DD doesn't have a problem at night, her problem is naps.

She also will not fall asleep in the car but will in the moby or in people's arms if she is tired.

It just takes her a long time to fall asleep for naps, so I was considering getting it for that.

I don't think it would be an issue if it is used once a day, but we'd likely be using it 3-4

  • I can speak from experience as I have a 12yo daughter who loved her bedtime routine (we just played a classical music cd all night every night). She listened to that same cd every night until she was 4 years old.  We never had an issue though with her falling asleep without it at grandparents, in car, etc.  Its just something she loved at home.

With our newest LO, we use the crack machine and I expect we may need to use it for quite some time, but have had no issues with her sleeping without it.

  • I'm not concerned. DD oftentimes falls asleep without her seahorse. It just helps on those nights where she's overly fussy or fighting sleep.

I use the seahorse for naps, but not the sound spa. It soothes her.  I am not an MD, but honestly if it helps them sleep, go for it.  You can easily wean her from it later.  both have helped us tremendously in the sleep department.

I understand what you're saying, but I don't think it's really a huge cause for concern as long as you use it sparingly.

For example, we have both the seahorse and the sound machine. They are both only used at bedtime. I don't use either one for naptimes. She is still able to sleep in her bouncer, her swing, in the car, etc.

I agree with Ibis, it's just another thing you'll have to help them transition out of. But, lots of kids have "loveys" that they can't go to sleep without, neither of these are very different. The seahorse is very portable, and the soundspa is small enough that it can easily be packed into a suitcase for a trip. Personally, I'd rather have to wean my 3 year old from a sound spa as opposed to a pacifier, lol. Smile

  • OP, I was worried about the same thing.  I don't want her to become dependent on it either.  I did get the seahorse and she loves it.  She doesn't NEED it to fall asleep but she likes it when she's having fussy time during the afternoon.  I just made sure I didn't put it down with her everytime.  GL! :)

  • i just got the seahorse today, and today was the first day i was able to get DD to sleep in her bassinet. and as far as the dependent/transition convo, DS used to suck (yes, suck) a blanket to go to sleep. he even took it to school. we got him down to only using it at naptime (instead of looking like linus everywhere we went). with the introduction of his lil sister we transitioned him to not using it at all (at 3yrs 9mos old) and it was pretty seamless. we talked about it a few months before DD was here, telling him that blankets are for babies and that when the baby comes she's gonna need all the blankets. and we even took him to the store to purchase a special blanket for his lil sis. he's fine.

the baby crack machine, seahorse, etc is just part of a bedtime routine ie. bath, book, bottle, bed. DS sleeps just fine without his blanket when he goes to his cousins' house. so i say use it if it brings peace to the household.

  • We use the seahorse and love it.

And to be honest ALL kids need something (ie. a binky, a certian blankie, a sound machine) to fall asleep so i'm not worried about it.
