What exactly is the "certain age" ?

I wonder about this too.  For real, not kidding.  Cuz I'm WAY old by nest standards.  Maybe I should stop buying my make up at MAC and *** like that??

Re: What exactly is the "certain age" ?

  • As I said in the earlier post, a woman of a "certain age" generally applies to a post menopausal, middle-aged woman in her 50s, 60s and above. It totally does not apply here.

  • Thanks!  Didn't see that post.  The phrase is just so Jane Austin to me.
  • I can assure you that I will never refer to myself as a "certain age". I don't know, it feels derogatory to me, like cougar.
  • OH, cougar...my favorite.  DH is 10 years younger than me.  I have heard that one more times than I care to remember.
  • I do NOT look my age at all and if I am 60+ and still looking good you are damn right I'm still gonna continue shopping the way I've always been shopping.  As long they dont look ridiculous like super tight or super low cut or super short (midriff showing)

  • Sigh.

Since I assume I started this, let me clarify a bit.  First of all, I never used the term, "of a certain age".  Secondly, as I see it, it is relative.  As in, a 5 year old girl looks kind of silly in a one piece bubble suit.  A 13 year old girl looks kind of silly in pigtails with giant outift-matching bows.  A 29/30 year old mother of two looks kind of silly in the same outfit the local highschoolers are wearing.

I judge myself based on what my 18 year old cousin (10 years younger than me who is like my sister wears).  If she would wear it, I WON'T.  It works pretty well.  ;)

Although, I will wear shoes she wears - it's mostly limited to clothing, esp casual clothing, since I often help her pick out dresses for her dances and she likes to shop at BCBG for those things, which isn't very young/immature looking to me.  I would probably consider some of the dresses she picks out.

  • Oh no Mattslady, I didn't ask because of you.  I genuinely wonder if I act too young at times.

And I have to say that I agree with you to a point.  Some people still look good in Jr's stuff, and I think it's based more on size than age myself.  For example, I don't really dig the 25 year old mom at dd's pre-school showing up daily with P I N K plastered across her not very tiny pj bottoms that should not be worn in public to begin with.

you would LOVE my mother. She is in her mid-60s and wrinkly like a raisin. She is tiny, but chubby/curvy and it's all...lumpy. Tight jeans, sparkly bebe shirts, poor dye job...I once borrowed a shirt from her that said, "Foxy Lady"... sometimes she even throws on a wig. love that woman.

One time we were walking through a crap part of Philly and she insisted on wearing this HUGE white mink. and she is always dripping with gold, like a pimp. if someone approached, I am quite sure she would have tried to kick his ass so I just kept my mouth shut.

See, now there is an interesting phenomen in the south.  (or at least where I'm from.)  We are very judgy and strict on codes for what does and does not qualify as tacky.  However, the curve seems to reverse itself as one gets older.  Old women around here are most fabulous when they rock the overly furry fur, and pile on too much makeup and bling.

You are assuming that someone who does buy juniors clothing is decked out in it.  I ONLY wear the jeans.  You are being very narrow-minded.

  • VCCake and Mattslady...you just described every single woman over 60 in Vegas.

I like to call mine "mommy" ;)

  • And, FWIW, there are people that wear "age-appropriate" clothing that look just as bad, if not worse (too tight,  too short, too "old". etc), than people who abuse the junior's section, IMO.  That's why I say it's all about what looks best on YOU & what fits you best- regardless of what section of the store it comes from!  You have to use common sense.  You cannot label someone based on what section they buy from.  You have to actually see what they look like wearing it.
  • Sorry for using that phrase in my earlier post. That was obviously a lame attempt at being tongue in cheek Stick out tongue I didn't really mean it in a derogatory way, I was failing at being funny LOL
