Pregnant after a Loss

My birth story...since I didn't actually labor...(long)

So our baby Kennedy Simone was born on Monday 3/8 at 5:22 pm. She weighed 8 lbs and was 20.5 in. She arrived on her due date after all.

Monday morning I had my 40 week appointment. We were to have the NST and u/s to check on the fluid levels. The NST went great. The OB even commented that the baby seemed "too happy in there". I hadn't had any progress, other than effacement up to this point. The next step was to check fluid and then make a decision on what the next step would be.

Some of you remember me complaining about the baby having it's butt up in the air and sticking out so I had a lump in my belly. It was very uncomfortable. The OBs would always say, the head "can't get any lower" and would tell me I just needed to get some contractions to get the cervix dilating. Well, the OB came in to do the scan and first started on my left and then moved to the right to check there. We were laughing at the fact that the baby was shoving it's butt up in the air during the u/s. So all of a sudden the OB says, "umm dear? that's the head!" We were shocked! I distinctly remember a moment maybe around 34 weeks when I told DH I thought the baby had flipped because it felt different. At my next OB appt they commented on the lump being the baby's butt, not the head. Anyway, the rest of the story is that the fluid levels were getting low. Too low. And they would not be able to try to flip the baby. Also, being 40 weeks along, there wasn't much room to attempt even with nice fluid levels. We were going in for a c/s. I had to just wait for the on call OB to schedule me in for the day.

We had to be at the hosital at 2pm for a 4pm induction. I wasn't allowed to eat or drink anything. I was upset that I had only eaten a bowl of cereal for breakfast as DH and I were going to go to lunch after our appt. I am still very glad DH was with me or I might have lost it! We went home and scrambled to clean up the house a bit and grab the last minute essentials for the suitcase. And all the phone calls.

I am glad I didn't have much time to think about what was happening. I had been terrified all along that I was going to have to have a c/s, especially since the week prior I was looking at induction with no progress.

We got to the hospital and had to wait in the waiting room of L&D for a room! There were only 2 seats left in there too. Apparantly they had a very busy day and a lot of c/s going. So we got to the pre-op area and got my IV and fetal monitor. The nurse was nice but she blew my vein out before I ever got the IV and had to call in the anesthesiologist to do a new one for me. We waited around for a while and then they told me the OB was in a delivery so we were just waiting on her. Finally around 4:45 she was ready and they wheeled me back. DH had to stay in the room and get into scrubs while they got me set up with the epi and spinal. I got really nervous when we got into the OR. My nurse was nice and just started asking me about our due date and anniversary, the story of our wedding getting delayed due to snow, etc. The epi was great! It didn't hurt at all! It was a weird sensastion to feel your body go completely numb though.

DH came back and we got started. It took a while to get her out and I ended up having to get an incision near twice what they normally do because she was so stuck. They grabbed her butt and she got sucked right back in. Then the OB reached in and pulled her out. She had one arm and one leg. My baby looked like she was hog-tied. Turns out she was frank breech. Her head and feet were under my ribs and her butt was at my cervix. It all made sense. I could feel her feet in my ribs all the time!

She came out biting the Dr's finger and screaming! But perfect. I was sad DH couldn't cut the cord but in the end it didn't really matter. We were glad to have figured out the breech thing before I was laboring as it would've ended up emergency c/s anyway.

We came home yesterday. Recovery is going well. I am sore, but it isn't unbearable. We are working on BFing but she has been very good at it from the beginning. I think she might have reflux issues and she may end up having a hip problem due to her breechness,  but it will be totally fixable with some therapy.

I would do it all over again, even the c/s. I had a pretty good experience! I can't wait for you all to be over on PAL!!
