Arriving, at 39 wks 2 days, Sophie Elizabeth was born! March 9th at 1:07am - 8lbs 1.6 oz - 21'' long. We are so in love with her already.
After a disappointing Dr. appt on Friday, I was still 1 cm dilated and 50% effaced, I became convinced that I was going to be overdue. Little did I know that my water would break without a warning just 3 days later!
On Monday the 8th, after kissing my DH goodbye and reassuring him that "absolutely nothing was going to happen today", I decided to kill some time and take a long shower. I shaved (even down below), painted my toenails, etc. I hadn't had that kind of motivation to look good in so long, so maybe that should have been my first indication. Anyway, after my shower I settled down with some food and an episode of A Baby Story...I had one weird twinge of a cramp, and bam! My water gushed. I had no signs of labor before that. Once my water broke, I began to get contractions. Nothing too painful, more like menstrual cramps...
We got to the hospital 2 hours later, and at that point my contractions were coming 3 min apart. After getting checked, I was 3cm dilated and 80% effaced. DH was fantastic and really helpful getting me to breathe deep and relax. We had taken Bradley classes together and the plan was to do it all med-free, so I began to mentally prepare myself for the average 16+ hours of hell. I labored for 4 hours and was checked again - this time 4.5 cm. It had begun to get really painful and I wasn't sure if I wanted to go natural anymore! My contrax were now coming every minute and were more and more intense. I decided to wait 3 more hours and see how I felt...nurse checks me 3 hrs later and I am 7 cm. I was happy things were moving quickly and that I was able to go without meds up to that point, but I was terrified of the thought of pushing. The mental image of my torn up lady parts and the pain associated was enough to freak me out and request meds. I requested an epi, which was heaven.
One hour later, I began to feel some pressure in my rectal area, and I thought that I had remembered that meant that I might be ready to push, so I called the nurse and she checked me. She walked in looking slighly annoyed, like there was no way I would be ready to push, and there I was - 10 cm and fully effaced! The epi helped me relax soo much that just 11 hours later I was ready to go. Pushing was not bad at all, and within 1/2 an hour, Miss Sophie came out screaming and pink.
We are still working out the whole sleeping thing, but luckily she is breastfeeding like a champ, and it perfectly healthy and beautiful. Best of luck to everyone in the home stretch!
Re: Sophie is here! PsIP long
Congrats! She is adorable. Great birth story.
I hear about so many people that do not break their water at home and I see you did. My mom advised me that with all three of her children her water broke at home before her due date.
