Toddlers: 24 Months+

Any toddlers still in crib?

My daughter will be 2 in a month and she is still in her crib. We are expecting her baby sister in April. I wanted to move my daughter to a twin bed but she loves her crib. She sleeps so peacfully in it and hasn't tried to climb out.

Are any of your toddlers still in there crib after 24 months? How long would you say is the cutoff time before moving them to a big kids bed?

If I keep her in her crib I would have to buy another one for her sister.

Thanks Ladies

Re: Any toddlers still in crib?

  • Mine is!  I'm not sure when I'm going to move her out, but probably not for a while.  She loves her crib!

My neice moved out of her crib at 2 1/2, but only because they needed the crib for her baby brother.  The transition went smoothly because she was so excited to move into her new "princess bed" with a rail.  They transitioned her our about 2 months before the baby came so there were no issues with the baby taking "her" bed, etc.

  • DS is still in a crib and I plan to keep him there as long as possible! DS#1 had a twin bed at 2, but he didn't want to sleep in it until he was closer to 3.
  • Mine is still in his crib!  He will be in it as long as possible!!  He's never tried to climb out and he's so big I don't think he could do it if he tried.

The boys share a room and can see each other from their cribs.  They are convertible cribs so we will just add toddler rails when we're ready.  I don't even want to think about the day that he can get in and out of bed whenever he wants....

  • The only reason we moved DD1 into a big girl bed was so we wouldn't need to buy a second crib for DD2. We just made the switch a few weeks ago, so she was around 27 months. Otherwise I probably would have kept her in the crib until closer to 3 since she still slept so well in it and never tried to climb out of it.

  • My approach is to leave them in until they're trying to climb out.

    DS #1 didn't try until 28 months.

As a mom of 2 kids 17 months apart I can't tell you how helpful it is to know exactly where your toddler is and that they're safe.

We bought a cheap second crib and it's some of the best money I've ever spent.

  • DD will be 2 in about a week and she is still in her crib.  She has climbed out 2 times.  She will be in there as long as she wants.
  • DD is still in her crib.  New Baby won't be here until Sept, and we haven't decided what to do. DD is not a good sleeper, so I really don't want to mess with anything that might make it worse (although I guess it could make it better...).

DD's is a convertible and we intended for that to be her forever furniture.  So at the least we will transition it to the toddler bed.

  • DD is still in her crib at 28 months.  She has yet to try to climb out.
  • ds is still in his crib, he is 2 years and 3 months old, he will be in his crib until we save up for his twin bed... we want to use the crib for baby #2 due in july.. we are hoping he likes the new bed we get him..
  • dd1 is almost about 2 3/4 and is still in the crib. We have no desire to convert her crib into a toddler bed yet and she hasn't tried to climb out.

  • We moved ds into a big boy room but kept him in a crib.  He does so well in it and  has never tried to climb out of it.  His crib converts but I just dont think hes ready yet.  Having him in a bed also posed the problem of needing to put a gate in his room (I dont feel comfortable having him roam around if Im sleeping...even though theres a gate at the top of the stairs).  We figured why gate his room if we could just keep him in a crib.
We bought another convertible crib for the baby...

  • Be lucky that your daughter still in her crib! My daughter was 11 months when she first climbed out. She would not just climb out she would plop! So we switched her to a toddler bed....and she loved it.....I believe it was less than 50 dollars it came with sides rail  and we used her crib mattress and she loved the freedom. It is low to the ground so no worries if does manage to fall out (which she has). Our room is next to her's so we just put a gate in the hallway so in the morning she would come and cuddle with us if she woke up early. Good Luck and congrats!
  • I have a 16 yo daughter and I moved her to a toddler bed at 2.5.  However, I knew that she could handle it.  She was the kind of kid that I could tell to stay in bed and she actually listened.

Ben, on the other hand, I would keep in the crib until he's 5 if I could (ha ha).  But seriously, he's a troublemaker and a climber and I don't trust him in a todder bed.  The soonest that I would even consider moving him is 2.5 and even then, I suspect he's not going to be ready.  I think he'll probably be closer to 3.

  • DD is still in her crib.  I plan to keep her there as long as she is willing.  From what I hear from my friends, it is kind of a pain in the a$$ when they transition to a bed and have their freedom.  So, I say, if she is content, keep her there!

  • Mine just moved out of a crib at 2.5; we have two cribs so it wasn't and issue when DS2 came.  My first was almost 3 when she moved out of the crib

  • DS is in his crib still.  I bought a bassinet for the first few months for #2.  If he is still in it and happy my sister will lend me her 2nd crib.  We sleep on different floors.  I am not ready for that transition.

  • DD is not quite 2 but she still is and so far I don't see a reason to switch.  She doesn't lay down anywhere except her bed and she is really good at going to bed and I don't want to ruin that!
  • DD is still in her crib and I don't have any plans to move her anytime soon.  We'll see how things go, but I'm thinking closer to three.  If I were having another baby soon, I would probably suck it up and buy another crib.

  • DD is still in her crib & will be for much longer. I'm thinking right around 3. I'm not one to agree with moving a toddler just to use the crib. If your toddler is ready, great, but if not, I don't see why, they have enough change coming as it is. JMO of course. DD is an excellent sleeper, and I'm not messing with that, and I sure don't want to be dealing with her possibly going through a sleep regression when I have a newborn.

  • We bought a second crib for DD when she was born because DS is a great sleeper in his and we didn't want to mess with a good thing.

  • My oldest son is still in his crib.  We are going this weekend to buy him bed, though.  I hope it works.  Even though I'm scared he's going to play all night, I know he can climb out of his crib.
  • DS is 2.5 and still in a crib.

  • Mine is!!! And he will be until he is in college if I have anything to say about it :) My kids are 19 months apart and I just didn't feel like he was even close to being ready for a big boy bed when #2 was born.  3 months later I still don't think he is ready.  He has never even attempted to climb out and he sleeps soooo good I hate to mess it up.  So we just bought a second crib.  I couldn't imagine having to deal with the worry that he was getting in and out of bed while dealing with a newborn at night too.

Sounds like we have the exact same setup. I had been debating what to do when I was pregnant, but DS1 really likes his crib. I'm going to go with it as long as possible. At least then I don't have to worry about him trying to climb into his brother's crib. It all worked out because I found a great (almost identical) crib to DS1's on CL and now they both have convertible cribs and can move to a toddler bed whenever the time is right.

  • DS is in his crib.  I plan on leaving him there until at least 2.5...maybe longer.  He did climb out once, but it appears to have been a fluke (at least I hope). I am not ready for him to be in a big boy bed yet and he is not ready at all.

  • my dd was two in feb and is still in hers...  she's just fine in it.  she doesn't try to climb out.  if i put her in a reg bed, she would flop out of it....   she tosses and turns so much i feel safer with her in the crib.  will probably change it to her big girl bed this summer.....
